It's more common than reported.

I say that based on the numbers of sold re-manufactured rear diffs.

Mine failed 2 weeks ago. new (re-manufactured) diff is on order.

A $4000-$5000 (AUD) repair job in Australia.

It looks very sad on the inside.

Thanks for sharing the video. Our E70's rear diff got replaced at the dealer, took almost 3 weeks to order the part from Germany as a diff is not something that they normally carry in stock.

We opt for OEM parts as they offer 24 mths warranty whereas a used one only offers 3 mths warranty and the saving is not much.

I'm thinking to write to BMW Australia HQ seeking for compensation under the Australian Consumer Law, will let you know how I go.

Let me know how you go.
The bad part number on the E70 4.8i was 3310 7552530 which was superseded by the better 3310 7602986 later in 2009.

Thats just ridiculous, I don't care how much power is run, or how much these cars/trucks cost, this is something that should not happen..
Abuse?? In my lifetime, I have abused tons of cars/trucks growing up, literally beating them and in no way even at 109k this should happen to a so called HIGH quality vehicle.

I have a 08 X5 4.8i with 83k on it, I have since grown up and don't abuse cars like I did, this I just enjoy and hope to god this doesn't happen to me or anyone else for that matter again.
I sure hope BMW stands by this in someway.
Start up a class action suit!

Yes, pretty disappointed. I suspect there are more E70s owners had the similar issues with their diffs as the service advisor at the dealer told me they had 2 x E70s towed back to the dealer one just before christmas last year and another one early this year with a broken diff.

The dealer did give me some discount on the parts and labour, however they would not replace the item under goodwill given my X5 was out of warranty for an extended period.

Did you guys have any symptoms before it failed? Any sounds or other behaviour?

I have noticed recently a humming sound from the rear at higher speed/gear particularly highway driving.
