KnudsonsM3, I believeside by side I can fit two, maybe three bikes in alternating orientation, andthe 3rd person occupying the 40% split seat. If you wanted to maximize, you'd really have to get a roof rack or a hitch rack and do 4-5 people and 4-5 bikes. Mountain bikes do get dirty

My solution really is to shelter my expensive bike from damage, weather, and theft. People these days know they can steal a bike with a pricey grouppp, strip it, and easily sell the parts online.

All good reasons to use a hitch mounted rack, or a roof rack if they are light mountain bikes (is that an oxymoron?). This was more for clean road bikes that are sometimes (not always) worth more than typical mountain bikes. If you have expensive mountain bikes and you want to make them more theft proof, then you have some choices to make.

I'll be buying a full suspension soon and they're upwards of $3,000 and can be as much as $10,500. My point, road bikes or mountain bikes cost too much lol.

I'll be using my e39 touring as my bike hauler.

KnudsonsM3, I had the Thule roof rack on my E39 and that was a great system! Are you planning on laying the bike down inside on its side with blankets and such?

I have roof racks on my e39 and it works great. But I'd like to have something for the X as well.

I hear you. My last set of wheels for the R5 cost $3k. Tires were extra.

I have always used roof racks, but I am tall and have never had an issue reaching. We had a race style road tandem on a Thule roof rack on both the X5 and X3; it was heavier, about 30 lbs, probably close to many mountain bikes. I could put it up there solo still. The rack fit the X3 better, since the roof is longer, but that just mattered with the tandem. I just like having the bikes more secure so that we don't have to worry as much about where we park. When we travel with bikes on the roof I bring them inside at night. The rack is locked to the BMW rails with four common key locks, and the bikes are locked to the rack. If I don't bring the bikes inside at night I still take the front wheels down from their holders since they are just secured with a bicycle cable lock.

Beautiful X5s and beautiful bikes! With a vehicle as versatile as ours, we have lots of choices when it comes to facilitating our lifestyles. We put the "activity" in SAV

This past weekend while my family members camped out in their tents, I laid the back seats flat and slept on a full-sized air mattress. It was barely "camping" but it was freezing outside!
