Engine difference N57D3 vs N57S / my car is a E70 LCI 40d

Dear Forum,

My car is a 40d. Vin number reports N57S engine and 225 kW power. I cannot find this engine spec on the Net. According to BMW:s official pricelist my engine "should be" N57D3 which is 225 kW and 600 Nm. The only N57S which is listed in the price list is the one for 50d which has 280 kW and 740 Nm.

I have searched the Net but unable to find a N57S engine spec sheet for 225 kW. Is my N57S engine the same as the one in 50d but only with lowered power from 280 to 225 kW or is it something different in terms of turbos or other significant technology?

A friend of mine also have the 40d and it's VIN also reports a N57S, 225 kW engine.

We live in Europe.

Kind regards
Knubblo

Yes, you have the N57D3 variant

The biggest difference between the N57D3 and the N57S is that the S uses 3 turbos and the D3 225kW uses 2 turbos.

I know that the N57S has three turbos, I am just curios to why my VIN reports my engine as N57S instead of N57D3. Given the recent recall of 6-cylinder based engines the N57S is not included. I was thinking that maybe they have skipped the N57D30 for the 40d models built 2011/12 and onwards using a N57S with twin turbos only.

Anyways, it is weird that both my 40d and my friends 40d VIN reports the engine as being a N57S with 225 kW power.

Are you using BMW information, or a third party VIN report? I wouldn't trust the third party, if that is what you are using as your source.

Hi,

I have received a printout from my BMW dealer. Also printed one via BMW:s own site. Same info from both. Same also for my friends 40d.
