E70 cranks but won't start

Hi all. I have just replaced the broken cam chains on my E70 3 litre diesel. The problem is that now it will crank but not start. I have checked the compression on all cylinders and it seems good. I bought the car broken so I don't know any history and I have not worked on a BMW before so am at a bit of a loss.
Could it be something with the immobiliser?
Thanks in advance, Mark.

Any error codes or messages on the dash or idrive screen? Could be any number of things so you'd be shooting in the dark without some point of reference. Best thing to do is first get it hooked up to a diagnostic system.
In the absence of any firm evidence to point you in a particular direction perhaps you might want to check the fuse panel in the boot...it powers the fuel pump for example which presents exactly as you have described when not powered, ie the engine cranks over but will not fire. That's just one example of many possible reasons for the fault which will be near impossible to trace without getting it diagnosed.

Hi. I have a bit more info that I should have probably mentioned. I plugged it into a Delphi scanner and it is making the correct fuel pressure when cranking but there is absolutely no smoking from the exhaust so I'm thinking the injectors aren't operating. There are a lot of historic fault codes but the ones for the immobiliser system are:
Immobiliser (Immobiliser - CAS (Car Access system ))
DTC Description
A0B1 - Input gear selector
- Signal missing or faulty
- Intermittent
A0B4 - Starter motor, starter operation
-
- Permanent

Then there are a couple of others:
41AB - Boost pressure sensor
- Permanent

4000 - Fuel temperature sensor; implausible signal
- Permanent

These codes may be due to faulty sensors but i think it should still start.
One other thing that shows up on the dash screen is a low oil level warning which doesn't go away even when the dip stick is showing slightly overfull.
Thanks again, Mark.

There are guys on this forum far more qualified technically than I am (Bawareca could you offer any insight) but I would guess you're looking at an electronic fault. Possibly no comms to one (or more) of your modules?
I have had a transfer case control module go bad on me and the the error code was similar to the first one you listed..of course my vehicle still ran fine, albeit without ABS, DTC, EBD or 4x4.
Since you've only ever known the vehicle in a state of disrepair is it possible some of the electronics have been scavenged prior to you taking over ownership? Do you have a full history of the vehicle? ;is what I'm getting at.
It may also be something as innocent as a harness that is unplugged. Perhaps you've forgotten to reconnect something?

If the CAS(immobilizer) is recognizing the key it is activating the starter, that part is good.If there is mismatch between the DDE(diesel engine control module)and CAS you will ha code in the DDE like"EWS manipulation".From the codes i see I exclude immobilizer problem. My guess is problem with one of the sensors, power supply for the injectors or mechanical problem.
You can disconnect one of the injectors and connect LED or test light to checl:a)power supply with ignition ON,and b) if you have a signal when cranking(the light should blink briefly every 1-2 seconds). Then open a menu with actual values of the DDE,same as where you found the fuel pressure values and look for engine speed when cranking.

I now have more fault codes on the scanner after replacing two burned fuses:

3F30 - Rail pressure sensor, signal
- Permanent
41F2 - Activation, electric fan
- Permanent
4000 - Fuel temperature sensor; implausible signal
- Permanent
4B0A - Unknown fault code
41AB - Boost pressure sensor
- Permanent
4A63 - EWS-manipulering, incorrect random code
- Permanent
3EED - Power management, quiescent current fault
- Permanent
455A - Unknown fault code

Does this give anyone any clues as to why the car won't start.
Thanks again.

If you read my previous post,I mentioned "EWS manipulation" and you have it right there in your codes-" 4A63 EWS manipulering...........". That will prevent the car from starting.
But you have too many codes related to a various sensors.I believe 3EED is related to the sensor codes. The computer may be missing the +5V power supply for the sensors. That may be external power supply problem or internal DDE problem, which I suspect. At this point I recommend you to find someone with ISTA ICOM(original BMW diagnostic equipment) and scan the car.The code descriptions will be more clear and there are test schedules built-in that may point to the problem. Also not every scanner will clear the EWS manipulation code. There is a chance the DDE is not from that car at all,so you may want to find a way to read the VIN from it .

Hello again. I finally have the car running after having the immobiliser and the DDE controller realigned at a local independent BMW garage. The only fault now is the fuel temperature measurement. I cannot find the sensor but I have a plug left over on the engine loom. Where is the fuel temperature sensor hiding.
Thanks again, Mark.

Hi all. I have the engine running now with no faults on the scanner so that is progress!!. However, on reassembling everything after refitting the engine, I have two reinforcing bars left over. The part numbers are 51717159587 and 51717159588 and I have found reference to them on Realoem.com but I still can't see where they fit.
Sorry for being a bit dull but can anyone let me know where they go?.
Thanks.
