2004 X5 Bluetooth / Assist / phone type

I'm new to my 2004 X5, 3.0 (build 3-04) and this site and hope that someone can answer my question.

My car has NAV and Assist, I'd like to integrate a Bluetooth phone into the car but in reading some existing posts, it appears I have to loose the Assist. Is this correct? the car has the pairing button on the wheel and I'm at a loss to figure out why BMW would put in a feature like Assist to have it negated if you integrate a phone or the factory CPT9000 as an accessory.

I spoke to a CSR at BMW NA and while they didnt have all the info I would have liked, they did reference a part number 84-11-6-946-993, a module that replaces the TCU?? What does this do?

I would appreciate as much detail as possible to sort this out, it seems logical that if the 05 has the ability to have Assist and Bluetooth together that BMW has reversed engineered a solution to fit a 1 year old car.

As for a cell phone, my carrier Verizon is CDMA, the factory CPT9000 in this format is a Motorola V60s. I understand its a basic phone which is great for me, I want a phone for business callng and not a GameBoy, so the loss of camera and "get it now" and all of the toys is welcome. Can anyone report on this phone (or similar alternative) and its BMW docking cradle, good or bad??

Thanks......looking forward to the reply

You can replace the TCU in your 2004 with the TCU from a 2005, which will allow you to have Bluetooth and retain Assist. Review this TSB - http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/841304.pdf

The part number they gave you is what you need to do this. The vehicle will need to be recoded at the BMW dealer after the new TCU is installed, as referenced in the TSB linked above.

As for a phone, the Motorola V710 works fine with the 2005 TCU and there is a docking cradle for this phone. Note that you will need to install a second antenna in the vehicle if you want to use the cradle, as the antenna that is installed in the vehicle is being used by Assist.

Thanks for the reply, I am however, still confused. I've read several articles on your site (its absolutely great by the way) and perhaps it's the multitute of information that seems to conflict.

From what you indicated, my 3-04 X5 with NAV and Asist needs to have an 05 ULF installed to have the phone and the assist integrated. The paste in below is excerpted from SIB 84 01 03 dated March 05. This seems to contradict the need to change the TCU if you use the CPT9000 which I understand is the Motorola V60s for CDMA via Verizon. I dont have acess to the additional TSB's refered to so this may be moot, but if i could simply buy a Motorola V60s and the docking cradle and put them in the car using whats in it from the factory life would be good.

Please review this, hopfully your reply will cast my directon in stone....thanks

These calls will now be completed without requiring the telephone handset to be activated or connected.
An optional CPT9000 Portable phone may be installed in the vehicle. For information about the functionality of the Portable Phone refer to Service Technology Bulletin (SBT) 840703056 available on the TIS Website. Refer to the Portable Phone Coding Procedure later in this Service Information.

6. In some instances an error message "Not possible to retrofit TCU according to coding code" is displayed. If this is the case then manually change the ZCS code according to the attached chart.
7. 2005 MY vehicles have Bluetooth activated from the factory. In order to retrofit a CPT9000 (V60) telephone and deactivate Bluetooth the ZCS code must be changed according to the attached chart for 2005 Model Year.
8. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds.
9. Install handset and check functionality of the phone.

Paste in from a readers old post. This sound like what I'm trying to do, or would like to do. I’ve got NAV and ASSIST

“The regular Verizon V60s works perfectly as the integrated phone in my X5 (2004, No NAV, BMW Assist) The eject box and antenna was installed by the dealer and the car had to be programmed to recognize that it had a phone installed. But beyond that, I didn't need to buy the $600 CPT 9000, my run of the mill V60s works just fine, all the functions as described in the manual.

In fact if you buy a CPT 9000 at a dealer now, they give you a V60s rebadged (and maybe with different firmware - but I doubt it). It used to be a V60i.

I don't know if the phone will work with the Voice Recognition features - I haven't had that installed.”

You could go the CPT 9000 route -- but it won't be bluetooth. That integration is "wired" in that in order for the car/phone integration to work, the phone MUST be plugged into the phone cradle in the center armrest. People like the Bluetooth integration because you can literally leave your phone in your briefcase / pocket / purse/ etc. and still answer and make calls via the car. You can also transfer calls easily between the phone and the car as you get in/get out at your destination. Also, you can easily upgrade your phone later to most bluetooth capable phones (note "most" vs. "any" as there are some incompatabilities). The CPT option is a fine way to go, it just gives you materially less flexibility.

I thank you for your response. Your explanation of the CPT 9000 "wiring" clarifys the issue and mystery for me.

My BMW dealer spokesperson (aka, saleswoman) told me the Motorola V60s (CPT 9000) "was a Bluetooth enabled phone". Based on this fact, its no wonder why I've been out of my mind trying to sort this out. Throughout all of what I read in the various posts, nothing ever said it was a wired phone...

Lesson learned, talk to the service manager.........

Verizon currently offers the V710 as a Bluetooth option and has a cradle for it, this is the route I'll go, along with the '05 ULF module

Thanks again for the assist.

V710 does not work with ULF Module

Despite what the BMWUSA website says (and it is not clear) the V710 does not work with the ULF module. It is only compatible with the Bluetooth with Assist unit that came in the 05's.

I have first hand experience with this over the last 2 weeks. My 2005 325XI sat at the dealership for a week with Corporate BMW telling me it would work and the dealership saying it doesn't. Finally corporate called me back and said they were wrong and the V710 only works with Assist module.

So before you buy the V710 ask your dealership about the V710 and ULF module compatability. I even tried Super Dave's software upgrade on the phone and it didn't work. I ended up dumping Verizon and going with the V551 on Cingular. The phone paired and synced perfectly!

In general I agree that Verizon did their customers a great disservice by having Motorola disable certain Bluetooth capabilities of the phone. There are, though, certain combinations that seem to give some basic capibilities, as follows:

The V710 with 1.3 Software will pair and work with the -552 Module but no phone book transfer

and

the V710 with 1.4 Software will pair and work with the -522 Module but no phone book transfer.

I am curious if the Super's Dave software will work to upgrade the phone software on Nokia 6230 and how do I get it?

The software update mentioned in the post is for the firmware of the V710 and will not work on any other phone.
