question about monochrome MKIV

I bought what appears to be an MKIV meant for a monochrome 3-series off ebay. The guy I bought it from is saying the following now:

It came from a 3 series with the small navigation. But the info on some boards that it is different from the RGB versions is wrong. Here in Belgium and Germany the can recode the mk4.We had several units which are already changed to color nav.

Is it really possible to recode this for a color display? I can't seem to get a definitive answer.

thanks... josh

I don't think it's possible.

The units appear to be exclusively either for the color screen or the small monochrome screen and are not recodable.

It certainly is doable, I've seen instructions on how to do it on the net. It can only be done by the service center and most of them don't know how to do it, but if you show them the instructions and insist that they do what is written on those, you will succeed.

Unfortunatelly I don't seem to find the page where I read this right now. Damn, forgot to bookmark it. I think it was in german.

recode the MK4

Please,

Ich habe eine MK4 DVD Rechner eingebaut. Es stammt aus einen E46 mit Radionavigation. Deshalb musste ich die ganze Software ersetzen.
Genaue Ablauf:

Erstmal GT-1 anschliessen dann:

1. Codierung ZCS / FA
2. Umrüstung auswählen
3. IKE auswählen
4. Sprache auswählen.
5. Dann die 3 Sprache angeben.

I wanted to recode a MK4 from Radio Navigation ( Monochrome ) to Monitor( RGB) Navigation.

First connect the GT-1

1. Code ZCS/FA
2. select after sales replacement(retrofit)( i know it isn't, but other wise you can't code the MK4
3. select IKE
4. select language
5. then you have to selet the 3 languages
6. Then on the nav screen you wil see load software. But you can’t see because your Nav still isn’t code for the Monitor. Butt you musst put the V26 in the MK4.
7. after you putt the V26 you have to wait in about 2 minutes the screen wil come, last time it took about 4 minutes.
8. After the succesfull software load , you have to select recode the Navigation computer, an you can code the MK4 to your car.

greets Appy.

In the mean time I've heard from Simon at intravention.co.uk that this isn't going to work. He has taken apart two MK4 units, one was coded for the monochrome radio and the other for the 16:9. He claims that the mono version was missing the video circuitry, so it can't possibly work with the 16:9 screen.

Could it be that it works for some people because they have the MK4 hardware with the video circuitry but coded for mono, but others have the MK4 units without the video circuitry so they are able to recode it for color?

Herby,

each new MK4 unit comes with no software preinstalled.

If the Unit is installed than the car wil be coded, so there isn't a divverend between the MK4 units.

Hi all !
Yesterday, and after a lot of "investigate" the hint, is confirmed that are 2 type od MKIV. One for Monochrome Display (Orange) and onother one for color display 4:3 or 16:9
I give the Part Number of my original MKIV (Picture above) to a friend that have a guy working in BMW, and says that this MKIV was developed for Z4 with MID (Multi Info Display), and was used for E46 with Radio Navi Monochrome like the car that I have.

So,,,,,

Beware when buy a MKIV on the net. The MKIV for monochrome do not may recoded for color because the components for these are mising.
Anyway I will put the insides pictures of MKIV for color when I made with it.
Regards !!!
