Question Upgrading from MKIII to MKIV and other newbie questions

Firstly a big HI as my first post!

I've done a lot of searching and research on this forum and I think I'm ready to upgrade my existing MKIII (V63 and now for sale ) to a second hand MKIV (V28 software) that I've just won on ebay

I live in Australia and the MKIV i won is coming out of an Australian car. It has v28 software on it apparantly. Please avoid any comments about why its being sold - I'm nervous enough as it is and aware of the risks

Anyway, here's what I've found out so far and I would appreciate any expert guidance to correct me.

1. Key out of car and remove the map disc from the MKIII.
2. Remove the MKIII from the rear rack using coat hanger or if I can reach use my fingers to push the tabs in and slide out unit.
3. Unplug the MKIII and plug in the MKIV and slide in the rack (if no tabs on it use the MKIII's)
4. Key in and turn to position ACC on
5. Wait - it may take a while to come up
6. When it seems to be all ok (when would this be?) Put in the Map Disk
7. Take it for a drive to "bed in"
8. Go to service menu (push menu button for a approx 8 secs on my model headunit) and turn on perspective mode
9. Enjoy perspective mode
10. If all OK - Now perfrom upgrade to MKIV Software up to V32 - this part i think is covered pretty well - ie burn downloaded image from this site put in the disk and again wait for a while while not using anything on the car and key in ACC position.
11. Again - put in Maps (does anyone have the latest version of Maps (V13 or even 14 for Australia they're willing share or receive $ for?)
12. Enjoy

So.. am I close?

Does the v32 software I downloaded from here apply to Australian MKIV's and X5's with the below config ok?

I've read conflicting posts on getting the unit assigned to the car? Do I need to do that and can I do that myself if I need to do it?

I have a 2004 X5 with a 16:9 headunit and a MKIII at the moment (obviously) It shows 3-1/63 as the software.
The car has TV, OBC, RDS and a MIO iPod connector and after market Parrot Bluetooth kit.
Its a 3.0 diesel (not that i think that should matter) has had a JVC digital amp put in with a few 12" bazooka's at the rear and the OEM front door speakers and window tweeters have been swapped out for some stronger models.

I will take a few pics and jot down the step by step more fully as I go cause I think that the info I've found was a little confusing and sort of here and there and maybe it would be nice having a complete piece to help others as this is likely to happen more often I think so your help is going to a good cause!!

Thanks for your help in advance

Yes, your instructions are right.

The very fist time it is inserted and switched on, allow the nav to collect the almanac data. It will have lost almanac by being disconnected from the vehicle for a while.

Your car needs to be outside so the GPS antenna can collect the GPS signal, and have the ignition on to Pos1 to collect alamanc. Takes max 15minutes.

You can observe the almanac status in the service menu. Note that the status is only refreshed each time you call up the GPS status menu - so you need to exit and enter the GPS status menu to pick up when almanac changes from no to yes.
Or just look after the 15min.

Then do your calibration run - drive around, a bit of motorway, a bit of city street driving. The Mk4 can take a few days to properly calibrate, so don't be concerned if it doesn't come right in one day. Wait a week :-)

After the Mk4 has bedded down in your car, and you know everything works, then upgrade to 4-1/100 so that you have the latest software with all bugs fixed. 4-1/100 is found on the V31 or V32 OS discs. The OS discs are global software - the OS applies to every country in the world.

As for coding to your car - it is nice but not always essential. The only issues that may appear are:
1. arrival time. If arrival time doesn't appear, the nav needs to be coded for the X5 (it's a setting that affects older X5s)
2. radio type. Widescreen mode determines what radio options are displayed and thus needs to match the fitted radio. You cannot see what it is set to without NavCoder, but you will know it is right if all the onboard monitor functions work, specifically INFO and SELECT buttons.

You could use my NavCoder software to code ther nav to exactly your personal requirements. If you want spoken instructions in Russian, Italian or Spanish, NavCoder can do that for you :-)

Remember to make sure the MKIII red LED goes off before you remove the power and take out the unit.

Much appreciated for taking the time to reply Jochen

I'll keep an eye on the arrival time and see how I go with the rest. Should be a few weeks allowing for delivery etc and I'll come back to the group.

Cheers

Hello first post also.

I have just done a similar thing but have encountered a problem.

I purchased a new MK4 unit out of the UK and had to install new firmware. It seemed to work ok but when I put my new V14 DVD in the unit told me it wasn't compatible?????

It will accept my old CD form the MK3 unit but the DVD doesn't work. DO I need a specific DVD (Australian) for the MK4 computer or is it possible I have corrupt firmware preventing me playing V14?

The firmware won't be corrupt, but it would help if you told us what firmware version you installed.

Most likely the problem is exactly what the nav says: the map DVD is not made for your nav

BMW have different format map discs for different generation nav systems, your map DVD probably is the version for the E90/E60 etc, with the newer nav system

Tip: Australia doesn't need to be stored on a DVD, the map size is only around 150MB, so it fits on a CD easily.

Yes I think you might be right.

I initially thought it was the firmware because the splash logo would struggle to come up (if it even bothered at all)

That seems to have settled down now. I think clearly I have the wrong version. It was simple when it was all CD but it looks like there are three DVD versions for Australia. Not sure you can even buy upgraded CDs now. My Nokia phone has a pretty good map and it is only 109 meg.

I have v31 installed on a brand new MK4 system. Anyone have an idea what type of map DVD I require?

BMW wanted my chassis number which isn’t relevant anymore. Once they know I have tampered with it they don’t seem to be interested in helping.

This is interesting HBMW.

Did you buy the MAP DVD from BMW here in Australia and did you tell them it was for a MKIV Nav system when you did?

Is it actually on a DVD or is it a CD?

Can you post a pic?

No not from BMW but EBay. Was sealed and I asked all the right questions or so I thought.

In my ignorance I thought there was only one map of Australia or I should say one BMW DVD map format for this country but that appears to be wrong. There appears to be three (at least)

Turns out my research was flawed so don’t make the same mistake I made. Down $260 and I don't have a disc.
