2006 World Junior Championship Results - Canada Gold

Anybody else following the world junior (under 20s) ice hockey championship? It helps us that it is here at home in BC, the timing is good for a change. Good way to spend a holiday. There have been some great games, there are some exciting players coming up to the NHL. We are seeing it every day on TSN in HD, which really makes the new SXRD shine.

Results available here, updated throughout the tournament:

I'm trying to follow it but here in the States it's tough. The only highlights I get to see are during NHL games I watch on my NHL Center Ice cable package. (I watch pretty much the Canucks exclusively. Nice win over Nashville!) Those kids are amazing. The future of hockey, talent wise, is assured.

GO CANADA!!!

PNG: You may have to move back to Vancouver to keep up with hockey, lol.

The Nashville game was good, Naslund and Bert were both in good form. The win at home was overdue, so the fans appreciated it, also because it was a very high energy game.

Will you see the women's game on New Years Day? Canada vs USA, from Winnipeg. Good pre-Olympic warm up for both teams.

More Updates

More Updates:

Canada 3, US 2, on Dec 31st. Great game, marred only in the final minutes. The US team pulled their goalie with 2 minutes to play, as a tie would not be enough to win Group A after they tied Switzerland. After the empty net goal, Jack Johnson hit Downie with a vicious elbow, and received a 5 minute major, and a game misconduct. No decision yet on whether there will be a match penalty resulting in any game suspensions for Johnson; Downie's medical condition will be re-evaluated on Dec 1. The US junior team will now face an uphill battle against the Czecks and Russia, to get to the medals. Canada gets a bye to the semi-finals.

In other news, the US Women's hockey team beat Canada 4-2 (edit...5-3) in Winnepeg today. This was a warm-up for the Olympics in February. Good game.

Jeff, a heck of a game btw Cnd and US Jrs. Both teams played very well. I also enjoyed the womens' game today. Actually the score was 5-3 for US. Can't wait until next round.

Breyton: Good catch, I remembered that they were up two, but got the score wrong. Thanks.

Looks like we are the only ones watching the juniors play. PNG mentioned that it is pretty hard to follow it in the US, due to lack of coverage.

Any thoughts on the Johnson hit? Should he be back next game?

My daughter was given two free tickets today by her boss, for a game on Tuesday afternoon, but I checked and it is Slovakia vs Norway (!). Oh well. Skipping it means watching an HD version of Canada vs (winner Sweden/Finland) on Tuesday at 4 pm.

Should have been one game suspension, no doubt. It was a vicious elbow.

More results from Tuesday Jan 3:

Canada 4, Finland 0. Canada advances to gold medal game on Thursday.

Russia 5, USA 1. Russia advances to gold medal game on Thursday.

USA was looking tired. Lots of penalties and a few fights, all in the final few minutes. Unfortunately, Jack Johnson was booed every time he touched the puck for the whole game, due to his attack on Downie after the empty-net goal during Saturday's game.

USA will play Finland for bronze on Thursday.

Good job CDN Jr's! I didn't get to see the Canada-Finland game but I'm pleased with the results. I also impressed that the lads are realistic and keeping an even keel. They know that the real deal is still to come.

The hit on Downie I did see. That should have been a match penalty, not just a game misconduct. There was no mitigation for that hit. It was a flat out attempt to injure. They say that Johnson is actually a nice guy but that doesn't matter one bit.

On a different note, the Canucks-Blues game was disgusting. The Canucks played like shite and I think it's time they admit they need a goalie. Having three guys from Manitoba playing D is bad too.

Canada 5, Russia 0.

Canada takes gold, Russia silver. Finland over USA 4-2, Finland takes bronze, USA will try again next year.

Incredible final game. Russia was robbed of a goal early on, the ref didn't see it, the tape replay shows it went in, but play had resumed so it didn't count. Canada was up 2-0 at the time, and neither team ever let up, so not sure if it would have changed the outcome. The energy all these kids kept up for the entire game was unbelievable. Definitely better to watch than the NHL.
