Full iPhone integration in BMW & MINI

BMW Group with full integration for new Apple iPhone in BMW and MINI models.
09.03.2007

Munich. Technology authority in the automobile sector does not only reveal itself today after the understanding BMW Group in components for the improvement of the driving dynamics, the comfort or security. Strengthened the Bavarian manufacturer demonstrates his innovation strength also within the range of intelligent software, among other things for telecommunications and information technology on board. Thus BMW Group made a fully integrated integration possible of the innovative Apple iPhone as world-wide first a car manufacturer in June 2007 punctually for introduction on the market in the USA into the vehicle-lateral control systems of most BMW models.
In time to the European premiere of the new Smartphones show up apart from BMW models now also all MINI of models for the end of 2007 expected the market entrance Apple iPhone prepared. On the press days on 13 September 2007 of the international motor show beginning (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main BMW Group show the fully integrated binding of the musicable mobile phone for all MINI of models as well as the vehicles BMW 6er, BMW 5er, BMW 3er and BMW 1er row and in BMW the X5. The solution BMW Group makes a comfortable use possible of the telephone and audio functions Apple iPhone in the automobile.

This becomes possible by a binding of the versatile mobile telephone to the control systems of the vehicle models. Thus with with BMW and MINI available cable adapter for the likewise available USB audio interface the music files to the vehicle-lateral audio system and the signals are transferred for the operation of the iPod functions. The iPhone can be loaded thereby also on the way over the same connection.
A condition for the comprehensive integration of the telephone functions is the Handyvorbereitung with Bluetooth interface from the respective BMW or MINI special equipment program.

Telephone and iPod functions were separated so far in vehicles, since they were operated over different terminals and interfaces. For the Smartphone innovation BMW Group developed a common platform for both functionalities. With the adapted software a music program, which the driver hears during a call over the vehicle loudspeakers, is stopped automatically and continued following the discussion at the same place. In this moment loudspeakers and microphone of the free intercom become active. After completion of the telephone call to the music enterprise one shifts back automatically.

In connection with the control system BMW iDrive can be headed for both the telephone functions directory and acquitting and the music selection and - rendition over the CONTROLLERs in the center console at the same time. The intuitively operated, ergodynamisch CONTROLLER platzierte in the center console makes the Handy use while driving particularly simple and safe.

In the MINI models the activated Smartphone functions become either in the display of the navigation system or, if missing, in the radio part indicated. If a MINI navigation system is present, can be steered with the control system MINI Joystick the telephone and audio functions Apple iPhone comfortably.

With the early integration of the new mobile telephone BMW Group prove their technology leader shank again. BMW Group understands itself altogether as a pacesetter within a change in the automobile industry, with which ever, also for telecommunications and Infotainment into the vehicles today and tomorrow introduction receives more software.
Since BMW Group already make a binding possible Apple iPod since 2004, the fully integrated integration of the musicable mobile phone of the same manufacturer was the logical advancement.

As supplementing special equipment besides in 2008 a developed Snap in adapter for BMW and MINI of models, particularly iPhone for Apple, will follow. This meant also a binding of the mobile telephone to the vehicle antenna and thus a still better receipt quality. Beyond that in the future also different Smartphones is fully integrated merged similar to Apple iPhone.

BMWNA PRESS RELEASE

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - July 9, 2007... BMW is pleased to announce that owners of many current BMW models will be able to enjoy integration of their new Apple iPhones™ in their vehicles from day one. In 2004, BMW was the first vehicle manufacturer to integrate the Apple iPod® into BMW vehicles and have customers take full control of their music on the road. So it seemed only logical that BMW be among the first vehicle manufacturers to ensure that owners of the new iPhone have the same ability to enjoy their music, plus the added benefits of Bluetooth® handsfree calling.

The iPhone will work as a Bluetooth-enabled cellphone on most BMW Assist-equipped models with Bluetooth handsfree-calling produced October 2004 or later (7 Series as of March 2005 production). Bluetooth technology provides a wireless connection between a compatible cell phone and the vehicle for hands-free calling. With a compatible Bluetooth cell phone, drivers can place and answer calls and select numbers from the address book by simply using the multi-function steering wheel or dashboard controls, or on some models, voice activation via Voice Command.

Access to the iPod application of the iPhone via the in-vehicle controls and central information or radio display will be possible on models equipped with the optional iPod/USB Interface. This factory option is currently available on BMW 3 and 5 Series models including M5 (as of March 2007 production) and the BMW X5 (as of April 2007 production). The iPod/USB Interface will be available on 6 Series models, including M6, beginning with September 2007 production.

The iPod/USB Interface option utilizes an adapter cable to provide full integration and functionality of an iPod or the iPhone's music player application. The cable has an iPod docking connector on one end and separate cables on the other end for connection to the in-vehicle AUX IN jack and USB connector. Full iPod menu functionality is available in the Control Display monitor or radio display on non-iDrive models.

Here are some pretty good news for Apple investors, although these are news that most likely won’t have a major impact on most of the rest of us.

German car manufacturer BMW, known for their luxurious, high priced, and expensive to repair cars, announced that they’re now offering full Apple iPhone integration with BMW MINI models, BMW 6 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 1 Series and BMW X5 car models.

At the same time, it feels like BMW is playing catch-up with another luxury car manufacturer Audi, that announced last month compatibility with Apple iPhone (which is all the more surprising, because both of these car manufacturers are based in Germany, where Apple iPhone doesn’t even have a set release date yet).

Of course, access to your iPhone via the vehicle controls and central information or radio display will only be available with BMW cars equipped with iPod/USB interface. The iPod/USB interface is available on 3 and 5 Series with 03/07 production, the X5 with 04/07 production and the 6 Series with 09/07 production date.
