wiring unit ddes
I have the Jlevis instructions for wiring, but it isnt for the X5, any suggestions or photos on where to mount the wiring harness and ground? Is the ECU on the passenger side under the black shroud? Thanks |

I'm in the same boat, man. I opened up my ECU today to prepare myself for the unknown and on my '01 4.4, it is on the passenger side, against the firewall. I had to remove the trim from around the hood vents to get the cover to come off. I love to DIMY, but this may be more than I want to tangle and I may end up writing a check for it. The baking and opening seems the easy part, it's the wiring that I ain't too sure about and those supplied wire just don't seem long enough. JV

I'm wondering too- Since so many have done it (many recently), I'm sure it can be done. But the silence on wiring/mounting does seem a bit odd. In most posts, that part of the job gets skipped right over. I'll see if I can dig up any details around.

This describes an install on a 3 series, but I find it the easiest to understand: You get four little black clips with your kit. Each ring has two wires that run into a single clip, polarity doesn't matter. Once you have the clips on, slide the clips into the female clips on the light ballast. You now have a light ballast with the two clips connected to the two rings. Mount your relay near the + Battey terminal under the hood. Run the yellow wire to the battery post, ground the black wire. Now you have two wrapped black cables left. Find the one with two wires, a red and brown, and route them up the passenger's side of the car to your passenger's side light ballast. Crimp the red wire to the black wire with white stripe, crimp the brown wire to the all black wire. For the last piece, find the last black wrapped cable. It has three wires: red, brown, and red w/ stripe. Run that thru your cable tube (rear of engine bay on top of your valve cover) and over towards the ECU. The ECU is the black box in the very back corner nearest the steering wheel area. Remove the four bolts holding that cover down. There is one wire in that box that is red with a white stripe, and gold hashes on it. Tap your red wire w/ white stripe from your black cable into that red w/ white stripe and gold hash wire. Put cover of ECU back on. Route your final red and brown cable to the other ballast, again red goes to black with white stripe, brown goes to all black. JV

Thanks JV- Though it's for a 3-series, it's at least helpful. Wonder if the wire-coding is consistent between models... dare to dream!
NickNick, perhaps I was wrong to assume the Angels were correctly wired out of the box. Thx Drex & Imaz for the pics and details I found here: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...t=angel+wiring while perusing a search for "angel wiring" that had many good hits- still sifting. http://www.xoutpost.com/search.php?searchid=213288 The few folks who mentioned how long it took them said "4 hours just for wiring"!! Some took 2 part-time days to complete. Here I was thinking the real challenge was the bake (another hour or two), but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've seen AE's rated a "4 of 10" on difficulty & compared to an oil change, but both ratings seem, oh, a bit optimistic, esp on the X5 which is tight on space. For just the Angels/DDE's, perhaps this would't be so bad... But since I'm upgrading to Xenons, clearing ambers, and adding AE's at the same time, any additional hour (or 4-6!) has to be factored in. I'm going to look into local installers, so I don't end up with a ECU or AE as paper-weights, LOL. If you hear anything else that seems to make it more practical, I'm all ears. Best, M PS- Wasn't there an X5World exclusive video of Angel - install that was promised the last couple months? Ever released? Urban myth? Just Curious.... The wiring guide that we send you is IDENTICAL to the X5. Literally the only difference is that the car is an extra foot in the air.

i have several hours worth of video to edit.
its about 80 gbs long. unfortunately, it is neither commissioned, nor a 'paid' project, and my real world commitments right now don't permit me the leisure to produce it. moreso, i have to make the time to dismount my Predator Chromium buzzing ballasts that are making my PDC go nuts... i don't have the time to edit it right now... sorry. ps JV: nope, i got more tapes than that! lol! |
