how to change a brake bulb? (no joke!)

it is the bottom brake bulb (black sleeve). before I start ripping things up can someone tell me how to change it? I see the bulb holder but unable to twist out. I also see 3 screws which I think holds the plastic on the outside. I don't want to unscrew it yet b.c of the possibilty that there's a water proof seal. please help!!!!!!

I managed to lose a lot of skin taking tat stupid brake bulb holder out. It is not easy to turn. I decided next time I would go for the screws. I'm sure it's only a soft rubber gasket if it is anything like the older bimmers I owned.

Yep it says 7528 or 7628 but that's wrong. The right one is 7506.

Might be a stupid question? But why are you replacing the rear brake bulb?

Originally on our X5 we thought the bulb was dead (OBC informed us of that) and it could be seen from the outside. New light didn't help, it turned out that the light fixture had melted and was shorting..!

Interestingly enough this was on our 04 X5, our 02's lights never had a problem whatsoever...

The light went out. I was able to take the bulb out and the filament was indeed broken, indicating a burnt out bulb. Plus I had a 'Check Brake Light' warning message on my console.

OK, feeling like an idiot.

I need to change a brake lght bulb. Read the owners manual, it did not give much info on gaining access to the brake lights. When I took a look at the inside of the tailgate there is the plastic cover that seems to be removable. I thought it would just click in and out so I did a lil prying with the screwdriver. It did not seem to want to budge and I did not want to break anything so I did not push it.

How do I get access to the bulb?????

Signed... the guy who cannot change a freakin light bulb!!!

thing is 2000-2003 tailights are notorious for going bad. i used to think it's because of the constant banging from closing the hatch/trunk, but it's a weak design of the tailight itself. With age, from the heat, the circuit metal that makes contact with the bulbs tends to bend, and not touch the bulbs as well as easily break specially at the very skinny parts of it. So sometimes you might think you have a light out, you pull out your light, and realize the bulb is good but it's not working, well that would be stupid circuit that bent. of course best scenario is light bulb is burnt, and just swap it out. midgets must have tightened those bolts though at the factory your hands might hurt when you're done ;p
