3 Alldata questions Need help please
#2 Does BMW provide the dealerships with that information? #3 Is there a way to know BMW has provided dealerships with? Updated Alldata information. For example: This BMW TSB Indicates that software programming is sometime required as part of accessory installations and is covered under the new Vehicle warranty. However if you go to a dealer and need to get your car programmed for let's say a CD changer in an E60 the dealer will try to charge you $300.00 to program the car when in fact they should only charge you 1/2 hour for coding rather than programing. http://www.alldata.com/tsb/BMW/11596...906/10906.html Here's the story: I decided to get the iPod interface for the E60. It was a relatively easy installation for me but without the changer already installed the car has to be coded to recognize the CD changer. (what it does is recognize the iPod interface because it’s fooled into thinking there a CD changer). But here the rub. To get the car coded the dealer want’s about $300.00 because they say they have to program the car, which can take all day. This has to be done before they code for the CD Changer. I believe this is the correct procedure based on alldata TSB information. My question is this: can bringing your car up to date with programming be done under warranty? This bulletin from alldata http://www.alldata.com/tsb/BMW/11596...906/10906.html seems to indicate that it is covered under warranty which means that the only thing left is coding the car, which takes about 30mins and would not cost $300.00. However dealerships seem to be ignorant about information which requires them to perform a service under warranty conditions. They say "we haven't heard about that or some other cop out. Wish i knew a way to verify Alldata information with the dealer. Anyone know how to get the stealers attention regarding this matter??

I think alldata just publishes TSB's from manufacturers. It is my understand that what you see on alldata, is what you get at a BMW dealership since both come from BMW.
Yet, it is my experience that dealers are too lazy to look up TSB's. And are 'surprised' when I bring them a TSB, they should have found... Anyway, I could be wrong, so take it with 2 cents... |

Actually someone posted the PDF file with the BMW Logo and copyright. Now the information cannot be brushed off as something someone made up. Tomorrow we go in and start the process. In fact i believe i'll get my salesman to get going with this.

Barry,
do you want me to call Kevin D for you? I'll probably get it hooked up for free. It won't take all day. Who are you talking to at EB BMW? Quote:

I installed the interface myself but they were trying to jerk me around for $300.00 to get it coded. They claimed they needed to program the car before it could be coded.
I got it taken care of today. I produced a Bulletin from BMW which stated that BMW is required to do all programming under warranty. I told them that in that case at the most it would require no more than 30min labor to do the coding. So we are all set to get it done on Nov the 30th but i believe i'm gonna check with Concord BMW and see if they will do it earlier. Thanks for the help though. Quote:

being the in business, having the alldata service and having a factory diagnostic computer, let me take a shot
1. no 2. no 3. no Alldata is a service for independent shops to get vehicle specific repair instructions. It is an alternative to the BMW "in-house" service that does the same thing, but with official manuals. Alldata does its best to re-print any TSB's and all official info it can legally gain access to, but it is not the same level as the dealer in-house systems. The dealer could care less about Alldata. They often care less about TSB's, as someone said, they rarely even know about them! If you take a TSB, they will read it. However, installing a aftermarket (even a factory sold one) part will NOT come with free programming. That TSB is for any required update, not designed for customers to buy parts that were not sold with the car and have them installed and programmed for free. Some dealers may do it as an accommodation, but they are spending time to work on your car, what is wrong with paying them for their time? They are not making much money on the part, and they do not build free install into the price. $300 is WAY too much, but if it takes them 30 minutes, it is reasonable to pay them for 30 minutes of labor. Thanks Brad

Thanks Brad however as of October 2006 BMW is required to make sure your car is updated with the latest software before a BMW CD changer or any other accessory is installed. BMW clearly states that it is cover under Warranty. (see the pdf file)

I know they are "required" to do a lot of things, but as private businesses, they often choose to ignore. And as a corporate, BMW constantly fails to follow the regulations that require them to share technical info as well. Really shady!
Cool, seems we see eye to eye on the billing issue. It is a shame that most dealers act as stealers rather then just fair honest businesses! =^( Thanks Brad
