Interior door handle peeling...can this be a DIY

So the drivers side interior door handle is peeling. Its a common thing in the X5s, however, is there an easy way to DIY without having to take it to the dealer to fix?...and if so, about how much is the handle..?..

Handle cover will cost you around $10-14 depending on where you buy it from, local dealer or internet reseller. According to the ETK it looks like this trim just snaps into the door handle so I would think that the door panel can stay in place. Should be an easy DIY.

It is actually the door handle itself which is the problem (peeling).
You'll have to remove the door panel in order to replace it.

The following article explains how to remove the door panel
http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...ticle&artid=75

the part you'd have to buy is item number 4

I just bought a set and they run at appr 35USD

Its a known issue with pre-2004 models. If your X5 is still under waranty dealer should replace for free. I had this problem on my 2001 X5 and the dealer did the replacement for free.

Using mainly my nails I removed the plastic layer which is peeling and my door handles look now better than when new with the plastic layer on it.

Bingo, I had both handles in my '01 replaced by the stealer under warranty. Don't pay for it, it's covered if you're still under warranty.
