"Check Brake Linings" warning!
Hi, today I got the "Check Brake Linings" message together with the red brake warning light come on.
The manual is pretty confusing regrading instructions when this message pops up. What I would like to know if if I have to take it immediately to a dealer (ie is it an emergency?) or can I continue driving during the weekend? I noticed that the extended guarantee does not cover brake pads etc, so I am guessing that I will have to pay for the trouble. Does anyone have an estimate of what it will cost? Thanks for your help. |
You have a little time but get the brakes done soon. Cost in the US is about $1000 usd front/rear pads and rotors. (Rotors s/b replaced also) Most likely you'll only need the fronts done for now so about $500 usd.

I just did my front pads and rotors this morning. Ordered parts from BavAuto..total was around $270. Easy job if you're so inclined for DIY.

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

Crazy, mine just through the same code last night. but my X has 52K and probably needs pads, what is the ball park cost on that? I have a CPO but i dont thinks this is covered correct?

Are their any guidelines on how long you can run on "check brake linings" warning? I am asking this because the earliest that the stealer can fix my car is in a week and a half!

In general, I would drive it for 10 days, but I would be listening for any loud grinding noise and stop driving immediately if I heard any. |

welcome to x5 maint. mate
1. take it to the dealer or other local shops and have the mechanics look at your brake pads, rotors, and the sensor of the front and the rear. it's prob. the sensor telling you that the brake job needs to be performed. after the installation, you will have to reset the warning sign which can be done by yourself. no need to take it to the dealer to reset. if you need help send me messages |
oh!!! the cost!!! well, i only use the genuine bmw parts just in case...
prices vary depending on bmw parts... so do some research to buy the necessary parts for the brake job. approximately, they should be around 300 us dollar w/o rotors. rotors can be reshaped (recut)/ reused if not damaged too much. the price above doesn't include the labor. good luck mayte |
