tire pressure monitoring sensor
hello everyone..question about tires..i have a 2005 x5 4.4 prem. and sport package..i just purchased used set of 18 inch oem rims with tires already mounted and want to swap out 19's for winter..will the tpms on the 18's cause the light to go on...the tire place i went to told me that the light will probably illuminate because the tpms sensors in the wheels are vehicle specific so i will have to remove sensors from old tires and use them with the new set-up..i dont really believe him does anyone have any suggestions...thanks rob

Your car does not have sensors in the wheels. It uses the ABS sensors to indirectly measure tire rotation (it's a FTM system not a TPM system). Do a search on the forum, it's been discussed at length.

Well, some cars do have the sensors. This I know for a fact. My 2003 4,6is has one sensor inside each valve.
I found this out when I changed my original 87 20'' wheels with aftermarket 214's. I was under the impression that only the wheel speed sensors were used for the ''RDC'' tire pressure sensors. After changing wheels I got the ''Tire press. control inactive''. Needless to say I did all the ''reset'' acc. to the owners manual. Now I have 4 pressure sensors laying on my workbench in my garage ready to be fitted in my 214 wheels. Go Figure.......:dunno: |

Correct. |
BMW's in the past had such sensors (particularly some M5 models) and it varies widely among models which system was implemented and when.
FYI: What IS known is that E53 X5's from 4/2004 do not have a TPM (tire pressure monitor) strictly speaking. They have a FTM (flat tire monitor) which uses data from the wheel ABS/speed sensors to detect a change between the rotation rate of one tire versus another. A significant difference in rotation rates and the system interprets it as a "Flat Tire." A TPM uses actual sensors mounted to the wheel to detect actual "Tire Pressures." which were optional on E53 X5's up to 4/2004. The car must have the electronic module (for FTM) or multiple modules (TPM) for the system to work. |
I know the following:
-My RDC was working perfect, with my original 20'' style 87 wheels. -I changed to style 214, with the exact same size of wheels and tires, and after this the RDC did show as inactive in the warning system. Efforts to reset the system, with the new settings acc to the owners manual tried many times but no success. -We took of the tires of the style 87 wheels, and found ONE sensor attached to the valve in each wheel. These are BMW wireless units (433mhz) with BMW parts number. -The BMW electronic parts program shows these sensors for this model. My car is a 2003 model X5 4,6is produced in the 12th month of 2002. |
3 Attachment(s)
Made some pics of the Sensors.
Also I did a ''print screen'' from the BMW parts program. |
Some read from the abs sensors, and some have these sensors. I usually don't have a problem swapping them over, just an 11mm deep socket. You should be able to swap them over to the new rims without any problems. The only thing to catch me as od is that I didn't remember BMW using the RDC sensors in the E53's. I don't have them in my 03 4.6is... maybe they phased them in earlier over there in the Spain/Europe area.

yeah, its 100% sure that they are in my 2003. No doubt. The whole lot is there, with front and rear antennas, and control module etc.... I just have to put the sensors in my new wheels.......................
I was surprised well, as I was under the impression that the info came from the wheel speed sensors, ref. info received here on the forum. |
Just goes to show you how the products can change from market to market. My 03 4.6is was produced in 12, 2002 just as yours, and I have the wheel speed sensor system, and have not personally seen the pressure sensors installed on an E53 at the dealer... ever. My guess is that the safety regulation standards over there might have required an "active" pressure reading system a couple years before it was required here.
