Youtube does not respect the X5....

I was searching youtube for x5 videos and did not come across anything that was very inspiring.....most are of the vehicle struggling in some minor offroad conditions......:(.....now I never purchased this vehicle for any sort of offroading, but man, if I ever had any visions of grandeur....youtube killed them.

if u like going offroading one can get Land Rover, even Toyota will do a job.i for instance didnt get BMW 4 that purpose.after all x5 is a SAV not SUV.

if you need to go offroading than you came to the dwrong website. the x demolishes its competition on turns, curves, pulling g's. one should never question the abilities of an x because they could be the best sav on the market

Kee surfing. I found a few home videos made in Eastern Europe where a couple X5's are on snow-covered mountain roads. They try to get them to lose control & have to go to EXTREMEs to do it.
On that note, after driving in 4 distinct seasons for 40yrs in many vehicles, This "X- machine" is far & away the most sure-footed automobile I have ever driven on any road, pavement or gravel, dry or snow. When my wife wants to travel over the Mountains in the winter, she takes my X5 & leaves the Explorer in the driveway.
END of STORY.

The x3 got 4th & 5th in the 2010 Dakar after traveling 9000 km. The hummer was down in 8th. In most of the youtube videos the drivers did not know how to drive off road.

Search on "X5 dakar" and "X5 x-raid" and you will find lots of off-road videos.

Except that those aren't really X5s. The race vehicles were custom built, with look-alike body panels to make them look like X5 models. Then they gave that up, and moved to race models made to look like X3s.

Considering how brilliant the X5 is on road, it's surprising how good it is off-road. Most of the vehicles that are far superior off-road (various Jeeps, Land Rovers, Toyotas etc) are also far inferior on it. As for the Dakar vehicles, some X5s that have competed have been modified production models but all the 'X5s' and more recently the 'X3s' that have been up at the front of the field have been purpose-built race cars (tubular space-frames etc). Just like the Touaregs, Pajeros and even Bobby Gordon's so-called Hummer. The X3CCs that ran 4th and 5th in this year's event weren't factory entries but BMW did supply the engines - 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesels.

With regards the YouTube clips, an idiot driver can get even the best off-roader stuck. That's the moral of the story there.

The X5 does just fine off road with the right tires and the right driver.

Seems all of the videos I've seen it getting stuck involve idiot drivers with on-road tires in situations a lot of dedicated off-roaders would have difficulty in.

Not to mention auto mags testing it off-road with on-road tires and giving it bad ratings because of it.

I bet most people would say that GTOs aren't any good off-road either but witht he right driver and the right line anything is possible:

I'm most likely going to the hunting camp again next weekend, maybe I'll have a friend with a camcorder right past some of the big mud holes to see me coming out of it with mud flying and kicking the beast sideways in a 4 wheel drift coming out of the hole. (unless it dried up a bit)

When we show that, then a chevy 4x4 getting stuck in the same hole getting pulled out by me that will make for a more entertaining youtube video!
