X5 3.0ltr Burning rubber smell
Hi guys,
Yesterday i experienced a strange burning rubber smell under the bonnet of my 2001 3.0ltr X5. There was little bit of smoke that was coming from the left handside of the engine down around the exhaust/extractors area. I did a search on the forum and a few people indicated it might be an oil sperator. Is there anything else i can look for that would confirm this? Thanks |
Cracked valve cover..Maybe...
BTW the headlight can not be open...;) |

also i've noticed that the burning smell is only noticable when i really put my boot into the accelerator and then come to a stop a set of lights or if i park up. If i drive around normally/relatively easily then the smell isnt there.
does that narrow it down anymore? |
anyone?

Oil Separator
It's the oil separator. It's failure and the resulting pressure build up in the engine have likely caused the valve cover gasket to fail, causing a small oil leak. I just replaced the oil separator and the four related hoses yesterday after experiencing similar problems on my 2004 X5 3.0, including the burning oil/rubber smell. I had 99k miles on mine.
Can you also hear an air intake leak when the engine is running... hissing or whooshing? Do you hear a whooshing air release after shutting down the engine? If so, it's 100% the oil separator. If not, I'll be bold enough to say it's still 100% the oil separator if you're north of 85K miles. I'm a pretty good mechanic and I have to say the CCV/oil separator job is one tough DIY. I eventually got it done using the DIY link on this site but I will tell you it is not a job for your average DIY oil changer. You really have to be committed on this one. |
I had the same problem. oil separator and valve cover gasket.

sounds like thats my problem then.
I dont recall hearing an intake leak or anything like that but then again i havent been listening closely. Can someone list off the parts i need for this. I'm assuming oil separator, valve cover gasket..........anything else? I usually buy the parts then get my local mech to do the work. |
is the valve cover gasket relatively easy to replace?
