Brake light in dashboard stays on even after brake job

Hello all,

We have a 2004 X5 3.0 with 67,000 miles. The brakes were done once under warranty at 35,000 miles. The brake light came on the other day on the dashboard reading Check Brake Linings. I took it to my favorite mechanic and he replaced all brake pads (front and rear) and said only the front sensors need replacing. He changed the front sensor and looked at rear sensor which looked just fine. Then, he reset the lights using his odb2. The brake light came back on today.

Q1) should the brake light go off once the brake job is done? I mean, did he need to reset it with ODB?

Q2) Why did the brake light came back on after reset and new brake pads and new sensor on the front (which was believed to be the culprit for the light?

Thanks,
Mohmd.

you should search in the DIY section but i think you might have to do that turn steering wheel all the way left, all the way right, all the way left (or vise versa) to reset it...or is that what you do when you change the battery or something...i forget

I just did my rears and the light stayed on. I then pulled the pad with the sensor and realized that I had pinched the wire when needlenosing the sensor clip into the pad. I massaged it a bit and it worked fine. Pretty basic sensor system, no need to use scan tool to reset. Must be a loose wire (IMHO) or the other sensor that "looked" fine might need to be replaced. Get one and plug it into the harness and see if light goes out, that will tell you for sure.

The sensors get hard and brittle over time from the heat. If he didn't replace the rear sensor, he still had to have it out to change the pads, and it is the most likely reason for the light being on. As mentioned above, no reset necessary if the sensors are hooked up and functioning correctly.

The Check Brake Linings report came on when I was test driving my 2005 3.0 D - not a good sign ! When I pointed this out to the dealer he said it had just had new brake pads fitted and they would check the sensors.
When I picked the car up he said that the sensor wire had got trapped and it was now ok.
It was ok for a couple of months and then I started getting 'Check Brake Linings' again - I eventually realised it was only when driving on a wet road.

I fitted new sensors and haven't had the problem since .

I just had my rear brakes done and after a week of the Check Brake Lining indicator came back on. Took it back to the mechanic & he installed a false sensor for me to drive on for a month or so. If the check lining message doesn't come back, we know it was faulty sensor. If it does come back, we knew it was another issue. Well today, 2 weeks after they installed false sensor, the check brake indicator message came back. Any ideas? If it was the pinched wire issue JAH1 had, I shouldnt have been able to drive for 2 weeks trouble free right?

If the rear brakes have been changed, the car stops fine, and your emergency brake holds, you have nothing to worry about.

If the check brake indicator came back on, replace the sensor. If you are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE the sensor has been replaced, you probably have an issue with the wiring on the car itself.

The check brake message does not affect the functionality of the braking system. It's there to notify the driver that their brake pads have worn down to the point that requires replacement. If you serviced your brakes and disconnected your brake sensors, the indicator would come on but your brakes would be fully functional.

It took a day or two for the brake light to turn off after I replaced my pads and sensor. Maybe you just haven't driven far enough to reset it?

The use of the jumper wire in place of the sensor has provided a strong indication that it has nothing to do with the sensor and the wire on the sensor, but rather a wiring issue after the sensor, from the junction box onwards.

Thisn is the way you get rid of the check brake lining after replacing the pads and the sensor. Get out of the car and lock it!. Unlock it and put the key on the ignition, turn it to the on position but dont turn the vehicle on just let the key on the ignition on the ON position and after about 30 seconds the light will go away.
