I opted NOT to get the hitch this time. I do not want to alter the rear as it looks nice right now. I wanted to keep the sporty look.

I did not tow often enough to justify the $1,500+ cost.

My dealer quoted under $1000 (parts $525, $450 labor). I placed my order Friday, should be installed this week.

Yes that is the muffler. You really can't see much of it standing behind the vehicle. It is slightly visible, but I think it is the angle of the photo up close. That muffler runs all the way along the back end. The hitch crossbar actually replaces the bumper crossmember. The original crossmember is removed and discarded.

it seems like BMW could have integrated the hitch better, but it still looks nice

Does that kind come with an electrical connector for the trailer? Is there a place to connect safety chains? And is the visible part removeable?
