Dynamic Stability Control Error

This morning when I started by X5 (2008, 3.0si), I felt a strong vibration as if the car was being carried on a flatbed truck. It was almost like as if it was shaking. On the screen, the error message popped something like this:

"Engine malfunction, Dynamic Stability Control malfunction. Drive with reduced speed and get your vehicle checked by your authorized dealer immediately."

I got scared and turned the car off, took the key out, waited for couple of minutes and decided to give it a try again. Put the key back in, the same message above flashed on the screen. Depressed brake and started the engine, the message disappeared and the car started normally. I drove to work very carefully, but everything seems to be okay now. I stopped and re-started the car couple of times since then, but no issues.

What could have triggered this message. Did anybody else experience something like this..?? Should I take it to the dealer and get it checked out..??

Sometimes if the battery is a bit low you tend to get random error messages.

You should take it to the dealer to have it checked.

The only problem with that is if you take it in and cannot simulate the problem, they'll just say "no trouble found" and call you and tell you that the car is ready.

Good luck.

I've been getting random errors when starting my 2 week old x5 as well. Mostly referencing xdrive, dsc, etc... i turn it off and restart and it clears.

if it continues i'll take it in.

I think these faults are stored in the computer, so the dealer might be able to find them.

Thanks guys. I am going to see the dealer Saturday. Will report back what he says. So far, I haven't received DSC error again. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have had this error. My rear shocks and satellite modules had to be replaced. Sometimes you may get this message on a good jolt from potholes. Usually it will go away after restarting the engine. Good luck keep us posted as to the outcome.

Hi all, got my X back from the dealer. They kept it for 3 days, but apparently, could not find the problem. There were no faults stored in the on-board computer, but they said that some of the control codes were wrong, so they had to re-set all the codes and also updated the software. How can control codes be wrong from the factory..?? Could it be that my X5 is a US spec vehicle and Canadian codes are different..?? I also told them to look into rear shocks and satellite modules and nothing was wrong there as well. I guess it is one of those things which come and go.

With the updated software, I don't get the BMW logo in control display when I start the car anymore and it goes right to the Navigation Accept screen, which is good. Now the logo only comes up when I turn off the car and take the key out.

What do you mean by Navigation Accept screen? I don't get anything like that. When I start the car I see the main menu of iDrive right away.

hmm... not sure what it is called, but it is that standard warning to not use the system when the vehicle is in motion and blah, blah, blah... with the "Accept" prompt at the bottom left. If you don't select it, I think it goes away after a few seconds and iDrive menu come up.
