Has been covered before but I will do it again.
X6 is slightly wider and longer than X5 and sits a little lower.

X6 has twin-turbo engines, with DPC, paddle shifters, more leather on dash. X6 seats 4 only.

X6 seems to weigh the same as X5 (disappointingly) and the increased length is only as a result of different front/rear bumper treatments - they ride on the same wheelbase. X6 does have a 5cm wider rear track, has a 1cm lower ride height, but 6-7cm lower roof height.

The seating within the X6 is sunk lower in the cabin, so is less upright than the X5 and feels more of a coupe inside. Front headroom is about the same as the X5, as is shoulder room. Rear headroom is less, also rear shoulder room but only by a few cm. Boot/trunk space is still big, much bigger than the E53 X5, bigger than the X3, Cayenne or most other SUV competitors.

The X6 introduces engines that are 'not yet' available on the X5; namely the twin-turbo petrol straight six (35i) and a new twin-turbo petrol V8 (50i). It also introduces a new version of x-drive, plus a new technology called DPC that varies torque between all four wheels not just when power is applied, but also when its not. This makes it much more agile than the X5 and more sporting.

There are also some new exterior colours introduced on the X6, which are not available yet on the X5, plus a few wheel designs. Every panel is claimed to be different between X6 and X5, despite them looking similar. Also the X6 does not come with a panoramic sunroof, just a conventional sunroof due to its sloping roof design.

The most important point to note is that the X6 only has 4-seats, and BMW seem intent on maintaining this difference between X6 and X5. Otherwise think of it as a more dynamic performance oriented SUV with the same multi-road capabilities as the X5.
