I had a 2003 540i M Sport in 9.5/10 condition and FULL regularly scheduled maintenance records. Not the cute little ‘m sport’ that everyone claims to be the real deal, but the M Sport with the GF vin number, 6-speed manual, full factory installed M goodies... BMW NA made these for only one year, 2003, and only imported around 1100 to Canada AND the US - combined. They were a special order through the dealerships. Production numbers are far less than the e39 M5...but guess what? No M badge, no exclusivity. No exclusivity, no demand. No demand, no retention or increase in perceived value.
The 4.6is and 4.8is are super trucks, but I wouldn’t consider one an investment. Of course, I don’t think you would lose any value in buying one. I personally think the depreciation has hit its bottom, but this is just my personal opinion. If you want to make an investment, you can’t go wrong with an e39 M5 or e36 M3 right now. BaT has pretty much ruined reasonable prices for the e28 M5 and e30 M3. Last edited by X5M-ISH; 05-18-2019 at 10:04 PM. |

I keep trying to tell my GF that they just aren't the same but she doesn't fully understand it seems.. Thanks for this post to show her! The X5 is a great ride and all but I consider it a disposable vehicle after its useful service life.. Mine is a 3.0 so it is even moreso designed to be used up as a grocery getter, a damn fine grocery getter, but not an iconic classic..

Well I think a few of the other Non Ms have done fairly well in holding their value and being marked up. As examples, I'd point to the 318is and 325is as long as they're in pretty stock condition and have been maintained properly.

IMO the 4.6 has passed the initial criteria of still looking good. As far as X5s go the 4.6 in some combinations of interior and exterior colors and fully loaded are quite rare. The excellent ones will at least maintain value. That should drag up value of the other 4.6s that are in excellent shape regardless of combinations. However, X5s don't have a first car emotional connection, significant demand or racing history. I would never expect any appreciation to be enough to view any X5 as a good investment.

not to dish on anyone or on any thing. but why 4.6 an not a 4.8
Not not dish on anyone or anything but if were collecting a e53 wouldn't you go for a 4.8is it is the best and last iteration right. Or am I just missing something here. thanks

I wouldn't recommend purchasing any X5 for investment purposes. Buy what you love and leave it when you don't.

^well, the 4.6is motor could be considered more special because of its Alpina roots and only the Alpina B10 ever shared it. The N62B48 of the 4.8is saw service in a lot of other mainstream BMW's.
