Trust me. I install car starters and i've tried almost everything to start my X5 without the key .

X5's that are getting stolen are probably being towed to a location then someone somehow programs new keys to work in the vehicle.

Anyway you look at it , someone who works or has worked in a bmw service center is involved.

I wonder if it would be possible to locate your car through the GPS navigation system...........General Motors can track all there vehicles with Onstar
I realy don't know how was my X5 stolen,I also heared how they start Audi,VW and other cars without the keys....

Sorry to hear about your stolen car. I had things stolen out of my car, and I was so mad and upset, feel so violated. So it must be 100x worse to have the whole car stolen! Hope you get another one and enjoy it longer!

They took a Leather jacket, a digital camera (the one that does not work is the replacement) a pair of sun glasses and a laptop.

Got all my money back and then some from insurance. The funny thing is that this area is not known for theft... i mean at all. I never even used to lock my doors at night. But there was a rash of theft in the area. I guess about a month ago now, a guy down the street from me caught some guy in his truck, when he asked him what he was doing he said he was looking for a place to sleep. But, all the guys stuff from the truck was lying on the ground and he was in the glovebox when he found him. So he dragged him from his truck and kicked the crap out of him. And then called the police. I am not one for violence unless I am protecting myself or someone I know. But this guy had it commin. Never got any of my stuff back, but I guess when they went to his house they found a ton of stuff.

Sweet justice, the guy is behind bars now!

I don't know if I should post this here, but what usually happens is that they bust the key lock, and the owner might have a wallet key or valet key inside the vehicle, so they go through everything and hopefully find that key. The only deterrent then is if you set the "code" function on your OBC, or from your nav screen... that's how I got away from having those ba$tards take my X5 back in Jan of 05 ...

Of course if they find the valet key they can nab your X.

One thing that was happening up here in Canada was thieves were looking for car starter antennas on higher end vehicles with the key immobilizers.

They would break in and try to locate the factory key in an aftermarket car starter module needed to start the car by remote.

Now I tell the customer I have to cut the end of there key off so if a thief finds it , it wont be able to be used in the ignition.
