Folding mirror

My passenger side mirror was very loose and would not stay in place. Also when I used the button to fold the mirrors, the passenger side would make a horrible noise.

I read about the little metal clip that sometime breaks, but the symptoms didn't sound the same for my mirror. Here is the link to that thread:

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ixed-pics.html

The folding motor sounded like it was running, but the mirror was too loose to fold. I tightened the screws as indicated in this thread:

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...bolt-pics.html

But that did not fix the problem

So, I pulled the mirror apart and unscrewed the torx screws that I had just tightened. Then I unscrewed the motor housing. Inside the housing there is a silver metal motor. It looks like is is supposed to stay stationary while the mirror moves. Mine spun freely in the housing. It appears that there are little metal tabs on the bottom of the motor that had broken off allowing it to move inside the housing.

Here is a pic of the part that I am referring to:

So, I used some epoxy on it and reassembled.

Now my mirror works like a champ.

I actually don't like the feature at all. Just one more thing that can break. Also, the mirrors don't fold flat against the car.

Sorry about the crappy pictures from my cell phone

This sounds like what my drivers mirror does. It is always loose and when I fold it in all the way it starts skipping and popping and then retracts back out. I dont care about having the folding mirror option I just dont like that the mirror is loose.

On the topic of folding mirrors, when I press my button to fold them, my passenger mirror folds and then unfolds while my driver's mirror does what it's suppose to. Is there some kind of adjustment somewhere I can tweak that sets the stopping point?

The stopping point is set by a little "micro switch". I guess the little metal tab on the microswitch breaks and that causes symptoms like you are experiencing.

You need to pop the cover off of your mirror, slide back the little black piece with an "X" on it and check the function of the switch.
