I got the most complete kit I could find on ebay from VIP KROM. I assumed the worst in terms of parts damage, and didn’t want to take things apart until I had the new parts to compare. When I took the mirror apart, the 2 pins on the motor housing were snapped, and the motor gear was badly worn, but the rest of the parts were in decent shape. The motor came with the gear installed, though I had to press it further onto the motor shaft because it kept the motor housing from fully seating. (The upright, outer gear also would not fit into the motor housing, so I had to drill the housing out a bit). But it all went back together fine. Before installing the outer housing, I could rotate the black plastic housing just a bit, just enough to make the end of the gear that lays flat slide in and out, which I think is to facilitate disassembly (otherwise that gear binds with the motor gear, and you can’t easily remove motor housing). The mirror is now firm and not floppy at all. But on hitting the button, the mirror doesn’t move. You can hear the motor trying to spin, it just can’t. I thought maybe giving it a little help would work, but no luck. I can manually move the mirror throughout its correct range (and no further) without it making horrible noises – it’s just firm. Maybe the new motor is crap/insufficient torque? I hooked my old motor up and it spins, but I can’t get the gear off the new motor to install it onto the old motor to see if it still has the oomph or not. I removed the outer housing and hit the button with just my hand pressure holding down the black plastic housing, and as I eased up things started to spin (but sound pretty terrible/gnashing). I’m 100% sure that everything is oriented correctly – took lots of pics and marked things. It’s not the limit switch – I fixed that a long time ago, and if I move the drivers mirror manually while hitting the button, the passenger mirror will fold (otherwise it folds in, then right back out, like it should if there is a limit switch problem on either side). I have the metal ring that rides on top of the spring that goes inside the outer housing clocked correctly – it is notched and can only go on one way. But it’s like that spring is pushing things down too firmly…? I greased the crap out of everything. Any input welcome. Thanks. |

My pics are below. I wonder if the cracks in my black plastic housing are the problem...? If so, I need to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXgTCG2pggk $140?! BMW E53 X5 Series Power folded mirror plastic housing repair kits(HGB9004+HGG8018+HGB6057)-皇泰企*社Wong Tai Co., Ltd |

When I do mine I will take pictures. Mine had the bigger housing broke and the motor is tired. I got a new one on the way.

After a few times moving the mirror manually, it jammed and couldn't be moved at all. (This meant I couldn't close either mirror, and I have to close the passenger side to park tight to a fence.) Took it apart. Decided to troubleshoot it a bit more. Guessed that the motor was spinning the wrong direction. Switched the motor wires and whadayaknow I could get things to move correctly so long as I didn't screw the outer housing completely down. Realized I didn't grease absolutely everything, so slathered the motor base and plastic housing inside and out. Though it's no longer "manual" in the way it was before (completely unassisted by the motor), I still need to help it - the replacement motor definitely doesn't have enough torque, and there is slop in there that suggests tolerances are nowhere near where they need to be - but at least it closes now.

I retrofitted power folding mirrors on my X5 almost 2 years ago with these and couldn't be happier. They are not factory but everything is exactly the same and plugs right in. No issues at all in 2 years so if you want a new solution less expensive than original, maybe these are right for you as well.

In the end, I received the motor, but it wasn't good I ended up going to a junker yard and discover that they had a landrover with the folding mirrors and auto dip glass, so I remove all four of those. Put the pasanger side motor, and now I have folding mirror again. BTW I have the driver side motor and the glass if anyone needs it. I might post them in the for sale section.

Sorry to revive this thread but I might want to retrofit powerfolding mirrors to my X5 but I want to do it as cheap as possible.
I have a question: Is the regular mirror base the same as the power folding version? Looking at pictures it looks exactly the same. If they are the same, that would mean I could fit a complete motor unit to a regular X5 mirror and possibly plug in the wires or run new wires to the correct switch inside and it should work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-E53-X5-...MAAOSwjgFevdOE |

I don't know, but vaguely recall from my researching fixing my mirrors that it is not that simple. I believe I came across several retrofit threads, so I suggest searching for them, as it's not really what this thread is about.

Yeah, I have tried to fit powerfolding mirrors on an other car years ago but that failed. I have found some retrofit threads but they used new or used assemblies. Might be easier to buy the correct switch and complete new mirror assemblies like Overboost has done years ago. Found them for around 300 USD a side.
