Question MkIV issue in Z4 M!

Hello. I spend most of my time at M5board and Bimmerfest's Z4 section, but have been referenced here due to this board's vast knowledge of BMW Nav systems.

My problem is very similar to docukost's:
http://www.xoutpost.com/navigation-sy...-gps-lost.html

Although mine started after a jump-start a few months ago. For a while it would correct itself when driving, but after a dyno run when the car "drove itself into the ocean" it has stayed in the deep blue.

I've tried leaving it outside with the key in R, but I saw no sat icons on my primary Nav screen. Also, for some reason, it drained my little Odyessy 680 battery in only 15 minutes (no, my lights were not on). Before you go blaiming the battery bear in mind that this combo worked perfectly for about 6 months, prior to the jump start. Although, like I said, the problem was not 100% apparent immediately following the jump start.

Here are pics of my Coupe's Nav data screens:

Does anyone know where the GPS reciever(s) is located on the Z4 M? I will check for loose connectors...

p.s. I really want to get the Nav working before MFest this weekend! If you guys don't already know about it, all BMWs are invited (Laidback is the organizer): http://www.m-fest.com/

Correction to above:
Leaving the key in the ignition for 15 minutes did NOT kill the battery. What happened was that when I came back the instruments would not fire up, nor would the car. So it seemed like the battery was totaly dead. When I went to the trunk the trunk light was working, as was the release servo. Then I noticed that the dome light worked too. I tried locking and unlocking the car. I tried my backup key. Nothing would get it to turn over or make the instrument or Nav screen turn on. So I put it on a 2amp trickly charger for about 15 minutes, removed it, and the car then fired up like nothing had ever happened. I'm at a loss for words

Some recommendations

Hi,

Firstly, give your battery a decent charge, and check the tightness of the battery terminal connections, and the ground connection.
Leave an automatic charger on the battery overnight. This cannot do any harm, and will do good if your battery was low.

RECERR means you are not getting any GPS signal. zhis is confirmed by the signal strengths of all 8 channels: all are 0.
The GPS antenna is on the top middle of the front windscreen around the area where the rear view mirror is. Make sure you have not got anything metallic covering this area blocking the GPS signal. Make sure you are not testing the GPS inside your garage :-)

The antenna is connected to the GPS receiver via a coax cable.

The GPS receiver is physically inside the GPS unit, which is the navigation CD/DVD drive under the CD changer. Also known as the nav computer.

Your problem may be an electrical failure of the GPS antenna, the GPS receiver (inside the nav computer), or what the professionals amongst us call "scrambled brains" :-) (it takes 5 years training and 10 years experienece to come up with that term)

In my many years of electronics experience I have seen many cases where a good reset will cure an inexplicable problem.

I would suggest you do the following:
1. Delete all address book entries and last destinations - these have been known to cause trouble with some older software versions
2. Update your software to the latest version of 4-1/91 (shown as 0910 on the diagnostics screen, you have 0800 currently), especially as the latest version contains bug fixes especially for the X3 and Z4 - the current production vehicles. Who knows, your problem may be cured by one of these bug fixes!!

A software update is easy: download and burn OS CD disc v29 or v30 (both have Mk4 4-1/91 on them), turn ign on and leave on, insert OS disc into nav computer and follow onscreen instructions.
Do not turn ign off during update. Motor does not need to run. If in doubt of battery condition, connect a charger before you do the update. Update takes about 2 to 3min, battery must not go flat and ign must not be turned off during the update otherwise memory corruption may result!

Good luck

Does this look familiar?
http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...receiver+error

yesterday BMW Dealer called and said that problem is with my Antena, today BMW Dealer called and said that new Antena didn't fix the problem. They don't know what's going on, they tried a different Nav Unit from a different car that is what he told me and it worked for 2 minutes and went blank. Said they are with BMW on the phone trying to figure out the problem. I'll keep you guys updated.

Thank you very much for all the info and suggestions! Strangely, the Nav seems to have fixed itself yesterday while our exhaust guy was driving it down to his shop to make a small adjustment. The car left with 0 sats, I got it back with a full cluster and perfect accuracy and tracking. He didn't do anything, but I'm hoping it stays this way for a while!

I'll see what I can do about a software update as soon as I get back from MFest, couldn't hurt!

so you didn't disconnect a battery or did anything to it? It just fixed itself? Mine is still at the dealer...

Hey guys, sorry it's been so long since I wrote. I've been tinkering with the car and GPS. It turns out the GPS antennae wire was bad. I've got a writeup 1/2 way down post #793: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...185835&page=32

Thought it would be your antenna :-)

Time now to upghrade your software to 4-1/(1)00, as this includes bug fixes which may improve things on your car (Z4)

Look for the V31 OS CD, this has 4-1/00 on it.

Since the first post, it was the antenna, i have Z4 and had the same problem, sorry i read it now.

The big problem for Z4 is the signal GPS inside of car

You can try buy a other antenna with connector SMB for plug into MKIV with a wire more lang than 2m, you will can put it into trunk rear for obtain better signal GPS.
