when the diaphragm inside ccv bursts then full intake pressure is applied to crankcase thus sucking oil from engine to cylinders thus smoke and oil consumption.

Agreed, and it can also happen from the CCV freezing open and drawing in crankcase oil. It just can't be caused by a leaking valve cover gasket.

So thanks for the input. Turns out the cyclone valve that was replaced 2 months ago was full of water (weird). It would definately have been frozen as the temps are -30C. So another patch job and see if this ol' bitch lasts another couple of weeks.

An update to this... The blast of oily smoke was the pressurized oil coming from the unvented crank case forcing its way into the cylinders, as this was the new path of least resistance. Days (not weeks) after my last post, she froze up again and spewed oil out the fill cap. I called the shop and was told that it wasn't cold enough out for this to be happening, and that I must have a massive amount of condensation in there, despite changing the oil. He advised me to crack open the dipstick and drive like that for a few days to let the condensation out. I have been driving for a few weeks with my dipstick out a touch, for fear of another damn freeze up and $700 bill. I will fully insert it when temperatures remain above freezing. All the bmw shops in town talk about how common the ccv freeze-up is. They typically get around 100! X5's per dealership per winter with that problem... Perhaps all X5's that are sent to Canada should come from the factory with the dipsticks out a bit. The Ultimate Driving Machine.

The only problem with the dipstick out a bit is it can cause lean mixture faults. Just a heads up for you now as that is still better than another freeze up, but if/when the mixture faults appear (and you have the dipstick out still) at least you know what it is!

Hey Weasel & Killcrap, does the updated cylinder 1-4 head cover (11 12 7 563 474) have the integral CCV valve as on the cylinder 5-8 head cover (photo on the left is of the (right bank) 5-8 cylinder head cover) or has that integral CCV valve been omitted in the updated cylinder head cover?

Essentially what I want to know is did BMW replace the CCV valve on the cylinder 1-4 head with an external one (mounted on a hose, shown in the right photo) or did they supplement the integral CCV valve with an external one (mounted on a hose)?

Seabass - how did it go this winter? Also do you by any chance have a photo of the right cylinder head cover with the acoustic shroud removed?

In your experience do you feel the new system works better?

And for those people who do not have the updated system, is there a frequency which they should either clean or replace the CCV valve assemblies and perhaps the 2 hoses as well (i.e. every 10,000 miles, yearly, etc.)?
