What's this little tube?

OK, here is really hoping that I don't make myself look like an idiot.

I have searched all around and cannot figure out what this is, and hope somebody doesn't show me a bunch of posts what I have missed.

OK, I have a 2002 X5 4.4

Anyhow, Under the plastic cover on top of the engine, on the (left side of the car), right to the front of the valve cover, is a little black tube. There is nothing connected to it. I was trying to see if it was supposed to have a vacuum line or something connected.

I have added pics, if that helps at all.

Thanks all,

--Troy

1. Yes, the batteries had died in the camera, and I decided to do this 10 minutes before I needed to be at work. (A.D.D. has it's benefits!)

2. and yes, that is why the cover is off so it can get cleaned up.

and for the record, I did a brake job on my X5 last week, 6 days after having foot surgery. 17 screws, 5 pins, and 2 plates - so there, beat that!

ha, thanks everyone, this is a great community.

I forgot to ask, is that the way it is supposed to be? is there anything supposed to be connected to it?
I know a breather tube is supposed to be open, but it sort of looks like scratches on the end like something slipped over it.

thanks again all,

Yea, granted that you X5 is two years older than my 2004 X5, it should look like this when it is done . The engine is a 3.d diesel. Just pulling your legs.
