Battery light: Alternator or voltage regulator

Hi folks,

today on a highway a red battery light came up. All of a sudden. Luckily I drove about 5 miles to my friends place, parked the car. Cranked the engine about 7 times and the battery was dead.

I suspect that the alternater is busted or voltage regulator is busted. How would I check with a voltmeter, weather this is alternator or voltage regulator?

Now the battery is dead, picked it up and chargin now, friend drove me home, I gotta pick the car up and hopefully drive it 15 miles on a battery only toorrow.

So two questions:
1) alternator or voltage regulator? how to check?
2) would it run on battery only 15 miles?

BMW 2002 X5 70000 miles 3.0i manual shift.

Nice f.cking birthday present... my BD is today...

Odds are 10 to 1 it is the alternator. Most of the time on a beemer if the regulator goes screwy it gives abnormally high voltage.

As far as the 15 miles, that's extremely iffy... If it is mainly highway it may be feasible, but I wouldn't count on it otherwise.

Oh, and HAPPY B-DAY! (otherwise at least)

I just hope 15 miles on a highway with a faily new 1100 amps/h battery fully charged should not be a problem.

So you say do not even bother testing alternator, just replace it, and the belts as well - A/C + serpentine?

As for the belts, if the ribs are dry/cracking now would be a good time. If they are straight, no need for worry or rush.
