What usually happens is the part of the plastic that the cable clips into on the rear part of the regulator cracks and lets the cable pop in and out. When it fully lets go it will need to be replaced, but if it is still mainly together there is a quick fix repair you can do to help hold it together that Tom (mrbmwx5) came up with, which should be able to help you out.
