Key won't open or close the X (PROBLEME FIXED!)

I have a 2001 X5 the 4.4i and i have never encountered a probleme with the key until now. I went to open it the other day but I had to press the open button about 4 tims for it to open, than after work i went to open it again but had to press it about 9 times to open. Now the key just does nothing wont open or close.... I thought i could change the battery but then i read it charges in the ignition. If anyone has had this probleme some insight would be much appreciated.

Maybe the battery's dead or dying? Sounds like it's either the battery or the radiowave parts...

I never took the key apart so I don't know, but maybe some wires or other electronic parts was loosen when the emblem fell of? The emblem may be the cause, or maybe just a coincident..

Do you have a second key to try? If the symptoms are the same with the other key then it might be the Basic Module 3 relays. Are you having any problems unlocking using the cental lock button?

tap the key against the floor very hard or some hard surface, and the key should start working again.

ok I have tried to tap it very hard against a hard surface but still no go! now if I press the open button erratically it opens the trunk but does not unlock the car? I have already purchased a new key that is on the way but I would still like to know what is going on with the key.

It is likely just a dead battery. After all it is about 10 years old and rechargeable batteries will only last so long. Anyway, here's a link to a DIY for replacing the key fob battery if you feel adventurous:

I'd wait until you get your new key and are sure that's working before attempting a battery replacement. Good luck!

Just did the reprogram on the remote as it says in the info of the link above .

Put the working key in the ignition. Turn to position 2 for like 1 second then back and remove the key.

Press and hold the "unlock" button then press the "lock" button 3 times, you should hear all the locks cycle through.

Now take the non working key and press and hold the "unlock" button then press the "lock" button 3 times.

Then turn the ignition on and off again to end the programming....

THX a lot Radaddict!
