What's Missing in these Pictures?

I've been hearing this metal on metal thunk sound from the front end of my X for a while now. I have been researching it for a while and came to the conclusion that it was the link bars that needed to be replaced. I was about to order them when I decided to change radiator fluid first. I removed the skid/air plate and found this:

I know there is something missing here I just don't know what.

Thank you.

Sorry, the second picture is upside down.
FYI 2003 X5 3.0

At first yes. Right turns. Then went away for a little bit, not it is all the time. Straight left or right.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
That is actually designed that way, and all X5's are like that. Don't ask me why because I think the engineers may have been hitting the dark beers that day, but nothing is wrong in those pictures.

now that is just weird. I swear that has to be the source of my noise . The rest of my suspension parts look great just one rubber bushing a little cracked:

I found a good way to test the sway links
have someone rock the car side to side
you do not require to be under the car to check , just observe from front of car and you will see any excessive movement .

Perhaps someone with a connection to the Factory Store (where the X5's are created) - a Premium Member/Moderator? and just ask: WTF?
I would really like to know the Mechanical Engineering marvel that is taking place here.
