2000 X5 radio replacement

UPDATE.... Weekend came and I attempted to install my plug and play XTRONS 7'' car stero and nav system.. No problem right ? plug and play as the instructions say.... NOT. After removing my factory radio /gps i discovered that i had different plugs that what came in my kit. Hmmm well looking it over i decided too many wires. I took it to local stereo shop Monday am. He looked it all over studied the wiring / features etc. The gave me the news, or bad news I should say, $700 smackers to rewire the new stereo /car /amp etc. and to make it worse there is no kit to keep the steering wheel controls functional. I was bummed out. $500 for a radio nav and now another $700 to make it all work.. Still I wanted bluetooth and DVD , ipod functions and back up camera etc. I gave him the green light. System is in , all features working as advertised, thank goodness and sound is very good. Just wished the steering wheel controls could have been maid operational. The Installer said he looked on line and there are no adapter / kits for the 2000 they start offering the kit in 2002. Never less install is done very clean perfect fit.

do you have Nav? DSP?

if it was Nav, does your radio have round pins in the plug or straight pins? for the aftermarket radio to work with the steering wheel controls, the aftermarket unit should have an iBus protocol and hardware, and all BMWs produced from about 1996 to about 2007 or 2009 (X3 first gen and Z4 were the last iBus models) have the same iBus protocol, that has been well documented and hacked long time ago - there are aftermarket devices such as StealthOne, eLight, CIS-IBUS that take advantage of the iBus architecture... the newer bimmers use MOST protocol

can you post your aftermarket instructions? maybe scan them and post, along with your car's factory setup?

i just found your other post, that you are updating - http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...lacment-2.html - you mentioned that your installer SUPPORTS this unit.

what kind of support is he providing?

it seems that the big black plug has round pins, for older C43 radios. the newer ones have the same plug but the pins are flat, as shown on the NOTICE pictures... those pictures in the NOTICE are clearly showing the flat pin radio connector and blue Nav plug and the other one shows the blue and white TV plugs (same deal as nav install).

This unit is not compatible with your car, as your radio is located in the trunk, next to the battery, and this unit should be plugged into the vacated spot for the C43 radio that would have been in place of your nav unit' screen.

I guess, it is too late now, as the wires probably were chopped - but the installer should have known better than this and should have advised you accordingly before taking a knife to the patient...

theoretically, if you can locate the iBus wire in the new radio and connect it to the iBus in the car, you can gain the steering wheel controls but with the system being rigged like that, it is just a wild guess...

good luck

Yes it already went under the knife but I was very clear i want the old system left intack in case the new radio where to fail the old factory unit could be reinstalled.. All componects are marked and saved. The installer said he checked every wire looking for a steering wheel signal wire and said could not find one. IDK was a bummer i have 12 bills into this system and NO steering wheel controls...

it shows that your installer is totally clueless about bimmers and how to wire them. there is no sush a thing as a steering wheel wire or signal - you can tap into ibus anywhere in the car, the front, the trunk, the overhead console, and gain access to entire system, including the steering wheel controls. it makes no sense to aggravate situation any more, you got what you got, i hope that the quality is good and that you are enjoying your investment.
