Totalled X confirms safety

Last week, while at 50MPH on a wide two lane highway thru farm country in Western New York, a pick up exited a cross road without stopping and hit my right side rear door and fender head on. My car remained upright initially, but the impact swung my car around one full turn. A wheel then caught the the blacktop road surface, and my car went into the air, rolling side to side three times. The car landed on the driver's side in a drainage ditch, with the nose buried in a stand of 2" saplings. Witnesses later said the pu was traveling at 50 or more mph when he hit me.

After calling for help on BMW Assist, I exited the car thru the sunroof, which opened easily when I pressed the button. I sustained a small bruise on my right calf, a strained left shoulder, and a tiny laceration on my forhead caused, I think, by a flying CD case, which had been on the passenger seat. The Sheriff/accident investigator could not believe I walked away! Despite major damage, including major kinks to the roof and passenger side floor, indicating the whole tub was twisted, nothing protruded into the passenger compartment. All glass remained intact except the right rear door where the impact took place. Every piece of sheet metal was bent, both sides of the rear suspension were broken from the chassis, and one side of the front suspension was likewise broken. The car had 12,736 miles on it when this occurred.

One of the reasons I bought BMW was that I was sold on the safety of the cars. This confirms my belief, and I have ordered a near duplicate 2006 to replace the '05. So, Guys, have confidence in your cars. They are the best!

I've tried to attach several other pics, but have been successful with only one.

OMG! So glad to hear you are ok. I am always amazed at how well the X5's do in a serious crash. Hope your aches and pains fade quickly and thank God you are ok.

OMG!!! I am so happy you were able to walk away from that!!! What happened to the driver of the pickup truck? I wonder if they were able to walk away too.

Thank goodness you were in a X5

Wow, you say your X rolled 3 times? If so, your X is remarkably unscathed! I'm glad to hear that you walked away from this incident with a few small nicks.

Your other pix probably didn't load because they exceeded the maximum file size. But your one pix does tell the story. Post pix of your new X when you get it and once again, glad to see that you're safe!

Excellent! Great to see the safety features worked just like designed, and you were relatively unscathed.
