I am bummed.. gotta take it to the dealer to get fixed now... anyone know where I can get a Toyo Proxes S/T 315/35R20 in NJ without buying one online? I called STS tire and they don't carry such big size in stock -- it would be special ordered.. thanks for help.

Hmmmmm.... can't answer the NJ tire retailer question, but my Toyos are getting pretty loud and I was worried that I'd get a flat soon. But, not have one explode!!!
Those 315s are pretty expensive, so your best bet is online. BTW, how many miles did you have on them?

That's not good news. Sorry for your mishap. When I ordered mine, the front ones were on back order and the dealer told me that they were having problems with the front ones and Toyo was going through a redesign. He didn't say anything about the rears. It bothers me that there was no warning!
Good luck on fixing the car. Wonder if you have any claims against Toyo? |

What's the load rating on the Toyos anyway? Perhaps you guys with Toyos are not getting the proper load rated tires for the X5? Don't forget, the X5 is over 5K lbs and with a full load of passengers that can exceed 5.6-5.7K lbs.
The factory tires according to TireRack: Front: 275/40YR20 Load Index: 102W (1874lbs) Rear: 315/35ZR20 Load Index: 106W (2094lbs) The W stands for the speed rating of 168 mph. |

Nevermind, I just looked up that tire and it has the same load index. Weird, maybe you hit something on the road to cause it to pop on the side like that.

g,
no Xpert or Tire Forensic Investigator here, but in close study of your exc. pics, I'd guess you hit some object that came up the sidewall or, a stationary object that gouged the sidewall. I'd bet on the former...and, you may never have heard it or noticed it, but it sure looks like an object gouged/punctured the sidewall; thus the scrapes on the rim. OTOH, it could be a sidewall failure, but very rare in my reading, unless very underinflated/overloaded, run at extreme speeds, etc., none of which seem to fit your situ. Rather than driving yourself crazy trying to cop a replacement tire in that steamroller size, to fix your ride's look cosmetically, I'd drive on the spare for a few days and lean hard on the installing Stlr for some "sympathy adjustment". Ugly, and you were lucky...the damage is amazing, but I've been behind 18 wheelers that tossed treads and it isn't any fun, espc. on a Scoot doing 75. GL with your Dlr negotiations... BR,mD
