Anyone ever taken apart a MkIII Nav before?

JV
First, I recommend that you don't try taking the drive unit apart before you attempt some of the tricks to remove the CD that you'll see on the bmwnav group on Yahoo!

As for installing V23 vs. V24.1, on the MkIII's there is no difference. For MkIII's, installing anything that is V22 or higher will take your drive to the latest OS version, which is 3-1/63.

The updates from V22 through V24.1 have all been specifically for the MkIV drives.

Cool. Thanks, Jeff. Still waiting for that Yahoo group to let me in, hopefully sometime soon. By the way, would you recommend an upgrade to an MkIV? I've seen them for about $850 on ebay.

JV

Edit: I found some useful info here- http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/bmwnav

I tried v23 beacuse I was not sure if it was a version problem or a disk burning problem, so I tried changing both. I read two possible methods for ejecting the stuck disk:
1) Hold the eject button while turning the ignition on.
2) Disconnect the cable from the unit then hold the eject button while reconnecting the unit.

Hopefully this will work. I know it scared the crap out of me when the screen went blank/flickering.

Good luck

Dennis

Same thing happened to my friend's X5 when I tried to help him upgrade his MKIV to v24.1. The screen went blank and stayed blank for hours. We tried and tried and finally were able to get it to eject the disk. We downloaded the other version of v24.1 (I think the .iso one) and use Nero Ultra Suite 6.6 to burn and it worked like a charm. We didn't have to burn it at 1x, but did burn it at 48x.

I read it somewhere that you may want to use a quality CDR, and not a cheap one. Our first try was a cheap CDR and then we tried the TDK on the 2nd try.

Thanks a lot for that info, gives me hope. As of now, my screen is still black and flickering, and the radio/CD will only stay on for 3 mins.

After repeated attempts to remove the CD by turning off and on while the holding the eject button, disconnecting the blue harness and reconnecting while holding the eject button, I eventually:

1.took out the Nav
2.removed the top cover {pops right off}
3.removed one screw holding the small motor in place {looking at the unit's black plastic face covering facing you, it's on the upper right side}
4.carefully moved the motor to one side
5.using the same electrician's screwdriver and T-7 bit I used to unscrew the motor attach, manually wound the CD out.

Do you guys remember whether it was then as simple as loading in the correct upgrade {I burned v23 at 1x speed onto a Memorex CD-R last night} while the key is in position 1 and the 'puter does the rest?

And does anyone know whether or not you need more than the .img file to upgrade with? Do you also need the .sub file?

God damn I'm gonna owe a lot of people a lot of beers after this.

When I burned my v23 disk, CloneCD looked for the .ccd file. I think this file tells the software what to do with the .img, .cue and .sub files. Anyway all I did was select the .ccd and the software did the rest. It did ask for the Key CD when the first disk finished so I would have that on hand as well.

Glad to hear that you got the previous disk out.

Still no luck on it. To test the system, I put in the BMW Nav CD, it came out each time I pushed eject.

When I tried again to update with v23, the system made the same noises as before, the CD would spin, but it didn't seem like it was reading the disc. I used clone CD this time, burned it at 1X to the same end result: black screen, which flickers occasionally, and the radio/CD shuts off within 3 mins.

I disconnected the battery for 2 mins and tried it all over again, hoping it might reset to the previous v17.1, still nada.

One interesting thing is now happening however...the CD will continue to play even though the audio shuts off. I was playing Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" and it cut off during "Sir Duke" and by the time I got back up to the cockpit to turn it on again after manually winding out the v23 CD, it was in the middle of "Knocks Me Off My Feet", about 6 mins. later.

I guess I'll have a steak and try it again in awhile.

Exclamation

Ok, now I FINALLY got the upgrade from v17.1 to v23 to take on my MkIII Nav!

Several observations, which I must stress MAY have been particular to my experience, but may help you if you try to upgrade your MKIII:

1.USE CLONE CD TO BURN YOUR KEY CD AND UPGRADE! I tried it with my Windows XP burner and Magic ISO- it didn't work.
2.Make sure you burn a DATA disk. Depending on your computer, it may default to something other than data. For some reason, the first time I burned my Key and Upgrade with Clone CD, it only gave me the option of DVD.
The second time, it gave me several options, one of them being a data CD.
3.The .ccd file is what you want to put on your CD. I downloaded v23 and the Key as a zip folder and extracted everything after download. There were several files in the folder, the one with the .ccd extension is what you want to put on your CD.

Ok, now if anyone needs a hand getting a stuck CD out of your Nav system, I'm the effin man. I musta done it 10 times in the past 24 hours.

Thanks to Dennis, Jeff, IFly (former X5 driver, hang in there, man), everyone for chimin in.

V23 of the Nav OS is WAYYYY better than v17!

Glad to hear that the persistance paid off!

I sure agree that v23 is much better even with the loss of OBC/Radio combo display.
