Broken rear hatch latch assembly

Sunday morning I was loading some stuff in the back of the X5. When I closed the hatch, it simply didn't latch. Checked to make sure nothing was in the way, etc. I could hear the motor when I hit the button, but no movement of the latch.

Had to drive 35 miles home with the hatch more or less in place, but not latched. Took it to dealership and am waiting for them to get in a new "hatch latch assembly".

Anybody else heard of this sort of failure?

Yeah this has happend to me before a few times. But i never took it to the dealer. Did you try locking and unlocking the car and turning it off and on again a few times? After i did that it latched. Its just not communicating with the computer.

Hi statdoc

Yes definately happened to me

The rear handle corrodes the switch and rear licence plate lights

I had to replace the rear handle and get it resprayed to match the car

Now working as it should

Cheers

Got it back from the dealer today. They said they didn't know why the assembly failed, and chose not to take it apart to see. They simply replaced the entire latch assembly, and return it. It was under warranty, so that is fine with me. Back now, good as new.
