Ok, I was obviously kidding in post # 18, and just needed time to find it again.

The seller is a company called AdapterShop and they are located in Koln, Germany and have an ebay store on ebay Germany. Check out listing # 370312862837 or go to www.adaptershop.com

Five things to note:

1. I have not bought this cable so I can't tell you what the quality is like.
2. They list two such cables for sale (item # 370312862837 and # 370300550670).
3. The cables are identical and he's listed them twice to cover all the BMW models.
4. The listings exclude compatibility with the X5 which is actually an error. I've contacted the seller and he says they work great with the aux input.
5. They'll run you around $38 with shipping to the USA. I suggest you contact him (Robert) directly [email protected] as I'm sure he can knock a few bucks off that price.

Thanks, I've been meaning to get one of those for a while now. I was about to order this (which costs the same)
High-end iPod and iPhone Docking Connector Cable to Right Angle 3.5mm(1/8")Stereo Audio Cable

or this one with a coiled cable (not for iPhone though)
3.5-POD - PIE 3.5-POD iPod Dock to 3.5mm Adapter Cable - Accessories - Precision Interface - iPod? Adapters - iPod? Adapters - Discount Car Stereo.com - Detail

I'm cheap so if anyone has found a decent quality one for less, please let me know.

Good info to know & thanks for the links.

A long time ago ipod dock connector cables were rare and I looked all around and could only find a white one that seemed good quality. I ended up buying a high quality stereo cable (3.5mm male to 3.5mm male) and a dock connector that accepts a 3.5mm cable. See post #30 here: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ce-need-3.html The dock connector has turned out to be pretty reliable and overall the result is pretty decent. What's great about having a dock connector that disconnects is that in the event that you want to connect a source other than an ipod you've already got the cable for the job. Even better would be if the stereo 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male cable had one connector that was mounted at a right angle.

It would be nice if a black cable w/ dock connector to 3.5mm in Monster Cable quality was available, but I haven't seen one yet. BTW, now that Apple has made the ipod Classic, Touch, iPhone, require a special cable for output, some audio-only cables apparently will not work, so that further complicates the situation nicely.

The 1st link you have looks good (for basically the same money as the one from Germany). I'd be curious to see which was better quality.

The 2nd link, personally I hate coiled cables as I always feel they stress the connection too much at one end, although it's probably a good one coming from PIE electronics. You should realize though that it is apparently NOT compatible with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, Nano 4G, Classic (120GB), or Touch 2G.... and Apple in their infinite wisdom DO NOT SELL a cable that does work!

IMO, the best and cheapest way to go is with this, heres the link:

Griffin TuneFlex Aux 2.0 for iPod Nano/ Touch / Classic - eBay (item 330320682739 end time May-07-09 20:31:42 PDT)

at least you will get your ipod charged too. and for $10.00 shipped to your door, how could you go wrong?

gianvito - true, it's an option. Personally I don't like the look, but you are right in regard to the price and charging issue.

A dock connector cable with charging can be set up in the X5 in a stealth manner with a cable like this, it will require some creative work to make it happen though. (providing it will work with the ipod device you are using)

Perhaps that not the best example for an ipod to aux audio input (since it's a cable for an ipod A/V input) If I find a better one I'll post it. But to answer your question, you would hard wire the cable to a switched power source, which would then give you functionality AND power.

X5 Meister, I like your idea because I have a radar detector and I need the accessory port. Can you provide more details on how one would go about installing this on their X.

That Griffin adaper thing could work if you wanted to install an extra power outlet in the center console, if you've upgraded or already have the deeper console pocket. I've still got the 6 disc cd holder and change holder, so it's not an option for me at the moment. You can grab an extra power/cigarete lighter kit from WalMart for like $4, comes w/ the wires, taps and everything needed. Simply tap it into the existing power outlet that is in the backseat area, and you're done. The ONLY thing that would make installing a power outlet in the center console hard is fishing the wires to the front of the console since it'll have to be oriented under the cupholders. The ducting for the rear heater vents is in the way of installing it in the rear of the console, and the sides aren't deep enough to house the new outlet. Once I figure out where to order the deeper center console, i'll post pics once I get it done.

I did this in my work truck, one for the cellphone charger (constant) and the other outlet is for my minicooler switched ignition shared w/ the radio).

Someone also extended the cord and put the aux input into their sunglass holder, so they can tuck the wires away all neatly. It'd definately be more work, but it's a cool idea. I personally need a charger since I use my phone to stream online music, so I need the power outlet.
