I just bought some too for my 02 4.4, but haven't put them on yet. I am waiting for the weather to really break so I can give it a good cleaning. Anyways, I thought the new tips just fit right over top of the old ones and there's a screw to tighten it.
Let us know what you find out, in case I'm mistaken. Otherwise, hopefully someone else will post a reply. |

They chrome tips slip on the stock exhaust pipe. Nothing to remove. Place the tips behind the exhaust, making sure that the fork inside the tips is sliding outside the pipe. After positioning, I had put a thick piece of cloth behind the tips and then slowly pushed them in with a 16oz rubber mallet. This was on my 2001 X5 4.4.

Hmmmmm, I think you do have to remove the black tips first. I heard those are a royal pain in the you know what to remove since they are from the factory. Check to see if there is a bolt holding them in. Otherwise, brace your feet against on of the tires and PULL (without killing yourself!)

Ooops! Chris is right. I did not notice that you have SP. The black tips will have to be removed. I had removed the tips by holding the tips with a cloth piece and jiggling them slowly sideways and pulling them back. It was a painful process. Once you reach halfway it gets easier.

Wow, I just finished doing the chrome tip upgrade on my 02 X4 4.4 SP and what a chore! The black tips are totally destroyed by removing them (guess no eBay sale for me) because I used a pair of pliers alternate pulling from the side, top, bottom, side, top, bottom, etc...
Nice difference though! The tops look sweeet. If anyone is interested I can take a copy of pics. Have a great weekend everyone!

If you apply lubricating oil (we use WD40 spray here in Europe) on the inside of your tips and let it work there for a few minutes, this should help getting them out..........................Again,when you install your new tips, you should use a little oil as well when you hammer them in!
