Magnaflow X-Pipe or X-Crossover
I was just on the magnaflow website and I see I apparently have a x-crossover. I thought mine sounded good, but if the actual x-pipe is louder I would definately replace mine with that. wtf is the difference? Is one louder than the other? MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust |

Well, I'm not sure but that link says: MagnaFlow's Stainless Steel Tru-X Crossover Pipe represents a significant leap forward in technology over traditional H-pipes. The more gentle radius allows for better exhaust gas scavenging, noise cancellation and better balance between cylinder banks. The result is a significant increase in power and torque but a reduction in db sound levels...the best of both worlds. I'm gonna interpret that as the Tru-X Crossover pipe is better in PERFORMANCE and REDUCTION in noise level. So, if you DON'T want those two things then, I guess go for the other one. Should be louder but might hear more rasp/pop AND the way its inputs/outputs are oriented looks like more work to install. Might want to consider deleting the mufflers then either and keep the Crossover pipe or put back the orignal resonator. You can throw in straight pipes too. BTW ... I have the same thing you have (crossover). I really want to try putting the resonator back and remove the mufflers but seems like a lot of work for maybe not that big a change of sound. I want the sound to be deeper than the crossover (like stock) but not necessarily louder. |

Yeah.. I definately missed that second part. I think I might try the actual x-pipe this time. I would rather have the tone than the minimal power gain
I was thinking about the mufflers instead of the resonator myself. However, I am more tempted to replace the cats with magnaflow hi flow cats like m5james talks about. |

I think the X crossover would be smoother sounding, but it would really depend what your X5 sounds like currently for anyone to compare.

So now I'm confused. The tru-x crossover does not improve the sound? Twins, are you saying that the sound is deeper without it or the same? I bought one of these during the amazon sale a few months ago and have been reluctant to get it on. I'd rather eat $60 than spend $100 more to modify my vehicle with no improvement.

You got it backwards too. Check the link again and you'll find two versions: Tru-X Pipe Tru-X Crossover The Tru-X Crossover is what he has and what I have. I've never seen it called Crossover before now. I had always seen it referred to as simply x-pipe. They must have changed it at some point or people just referred to them to as x-pipe. Re-read my post with bold/red. The TruX Crossover is the one that's supposed to have a smoother/lower decibel sound and better performance. Lower sound as in quieter not lower as in a deeper sound - compared to the Tru-X pipe. Which was the original topic/question on this thread. When I removed the resonator and installed the Crossover in its place, the sound got a little louder at startup and when getting on the gas. However, the sound is slightly a higher pitch than stock - not as deep. That's when I volunteered that: I had wondered before if keeping the resonator and removing the mufflers instead would be better for what I wanted - which was a little louder but keep the nice deep stock sound. However, I assumed that would be more complicated and more costly than just installing the Crossover. So, that's why I went with the resonator delete. Now weasel had confirmed, on another thread, that if I had kept the resonator & delete the mufflers, that I would have ended up with what I originally wanted - louder but deeper sound. I assume that it would still cost more than doing the crossover. Now I know my previous thoughts were correct. So: 1. Stock = Less loud than Crossover but deeper sound 2. No resonator with Crossover = Louder but not as deep as stock 3. With resonator & No mufflers = Louder than stock AND deeper sound than crossover (similar to stock) Pheww! Did I clear it up or did I just confuse you more! Last edited by TwinsPoppa; 06-25-2010 at 11:53 PM. |

Or you could go with the Soundracer, and change the sound whenever you like. V8 and V10 models available, adjustable volume, and no welding required
SoundRacer product

I don`t suppose you know where I could source one of the electronic boxes with PA speaker and multiple choice sounds such as - donkey , cow , horse , siren , machine gun , etc
I have only ever seen one with machine gun RATATAT sound at a truckstop in southern germany, I did not have enough Deutchmarks on me at the time because I was in transit to the east and there was nowhere to change money . I stopped on the return journey but they were sold out . bummer . |

I'd tried the part they're now calling the Tru-X Crossover on my 4.4 in place of the center resonator a couple years back. It completely destroyed all my midrange torque. So much so that in places I could comfortably pull my race car trailer in 6th, I struggled to pull in 5th. And at 65 on the interstate I couldn't pull hills in 5th gear like I used to. I had my local custom muffler shop pull it off and he custom made a new pair of pipes with a simple crossover balance pipe between the tailpipes and voila, all my torque was back.
Exhaust work is a science and proper placement of an x-pipe is probably critical. Maybe if I'd moved my x-pipe forward or back a few inches it might have helped but I wasn't about to go any further. And FWIW, I've tried the x-pipe assembly on another 4.4 and he had the same problem. But when we tried it on a 3.0 it seemed to work nicely but his wife didn't like the noise. So it's back in my basement again. A complete waste of $350 in parts and labor for my purpose unfortunately.
