N63 - Oil consumption - what is the cause?

I know a few people have issues with oil consumption on the N63. And I've seen the service bulletin from BMW saying that 1 qt every 750 miles is normal.

Hello! McFly. THAT is not normal. They can say the sky is orange and the sun is blue, but that doesn't make it true.

Sorry, I digress. I'm curious if we know how the oil is being burned? I've already had my Valve Stem Seals done, and that did NOT change my consumption. So I think that leaves Piston Rings or something with the Turbo.

Do we know which?? If the turbo.... is there a seal or something that would be serviceable??? Over a weekend or two, I could probably manage to get the turbo's out myself, if I knew that there would be something which was repairable.

Thoughts?

I had oil burn on my 328i a while ago. Dealer said there's leak on oil filter housing gasket.

look for external leaks, in the V where turbos are. smoke from tail pipe under decel or hard accel?

the best way to help seal piston rings on a FI engine is to run it hard. let the boost build cylinder pressure to put more pressure on oil rings.

No massive leaks, just a few drops on the ground.
I've never noticed smoke other than when the engine is cold, but I've also never had anyone drive behind me either and specifically look at what is coming out the pipes.

FYI - this engine is at 60,000 miles. So I doubt piston rings are all of a sudden seal now after flogging the engine a few times.

One of the problems duscussed about these engines is the initial piston ring sealing, or break-in if you want. Due to the huge power of the engine ,and some people being cautious to break-in the engine properly, the rings may never seal properly. In simple words, it takes load(combustion chamber pressure) to push the ring against the cylinder to make it seal properly.
Actually a quart in a thousand miles may not be so bad for a V8. M54B30 can "eat" up to a quart in a thousand miles without any visible signs of smoke, leakage, carbon deposits, etc.
