Maybe I'm misunderstanding your question but there shouldn't be compatibility issues between digicam and notebook. Any major brand of digicam and notebook should work together. In any event, I don't hook my cameras directly to the computer. I use a USB card reader and plug the flash card in. Using the camera itself as the card reader by plugging it in to the PC is slow and drains the camera batteries.

USB card readers are very inexpensive if you shop a bit.

be very careful as to which kind of a cardreader you have as the really cheap ones might as even the more expensive ones corrupt the data card. theres always a reason for why things are cheap. but I'm with Kevin on this one and there is no issue of compatibility between pc/camera

I guess the question could have been getter asked since i do Mac's and I don't use a card reader. I plug my canon into the computer and thats that. So i'm looking for something that dosn't involve a lot. My Grandaughter is in college and i want to get her something nice but I want it to be very simple to operate. Take the picture, plug in the camera, download the pictures, done.

with a canon you just install a simple software and then plug camera in press one button and thats all. they are almost all alike the price comes at the cost of functionality and since thats not a concern any camera should do. If you can be a bit more specific with the price range i can recommend some stuff. also use DPreview.com they are a great digi cam review site

Thanks for the help.

Price range is not an issue but since she's at school she should not have to worry about an expensive camera that may invite thieves. Thats why i said inexpensive.

ah ok. well being at school and not wanting to carry around anything too bulky and not having too many moving parts i'd look into a minolta dimage XT if they still make those. its a very nice camera for the price and the beauty of it for a girl is that there is no extendable lens it does its optics internally so no worries about breaking it and its very slim and light i've used it and actually got it for someone also a girl and a few of my friends got it for their gfs

I just bought a Canon SD700IS. Awesome camera. I carry it when lugging the full complement of DSLR gear isn't viable. newegg has 'em for $379.

You know i saw that. It's suppose to replace the SD550 correct? But the 550 has greater pixls? I was thinking of giving her my powershot s330 and buying the SD550
