Whistling X5 ???

Is this normal?
My X5 makes a whistling noise from the engine compartment during acceleration. No difference when engine is hot or cold. The local dealer claimed it’s caused by carbon build up on the plastic intake. They told me it can be cleaned but will eventually return.
X is a pre-owned ’03 3.0i and has hade this whistle since I purchased it last August.
I appreciate any feedback.

Doesn't sound normal. My '01 3.0i doesn't make any abnormal sounds such as you are describing during acceleration.

And Anna Nicole Smith married for love--anything that could have carbon build up could not possibly be plastic--the plastic would be a melted nothing....your dealer has had one lap dance too many at Solid Gold. Tell him you have an April 1 build and you are sure there is a kazoo stuck in the tail pipe. If he starts shaking his head, ask him to check if there is a Molly Hatchet CD stuck in the player. Oh, the downside of a full-employment state...anyone who can fog a mirror and hold a clipboard can be gainfully employed

Just an idea, but see if the clips holding the air intake/air filter box are properly seated...if there is an air gap, there might be a whistling noise when accellerating as the air bypasses the filter box.

LOL great response. I wish I was that quick witted at the dealership.
I'll make sure the air filter box is seated properly.

My 2002 3.0 has had that muted whistle since new. Many, many threads on the topic. It's normal IMO. Certainly not carbon related

As SuperGreg mentioned, this forum has multiple threads on this topic.
After doing a search, I came across one that mentions the DISA Valve.
I'm going to have the dealer replace mine.
Looking forward to hearing your mechanics diagnoses.

I have some whistling noises also but it's coming from the fan area. When I turn the fan off, it stops. But as I increase the fan, it gets louder.
Sometimes I hear it during acceleration also. But it's intermittant...

Let us know what you find please.

Found another thread regarding a fix.
http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...histling+noise

This one talks about the Intake adjuster.

My 02 3.0i makes the same whistling noise. I can only hear it with the windows opened. Dealer says I shouldn't worry about it.......is this true? I also hear a click when pressing and depressing brakes and driving next to a wall. Anyone ever heard that noise?
