e70 Models?

Just browsing, found this in Wikipedia. How long has this been out?

The BMW E70 automobile platform will be the basis for the future X5 SUV. It will replace the BMW E53.

The E70 will bring new engines to the X5 lineup. BMW will begin a shift of replacing engines from the 2006 7-Series. It is likely that the E70 will inherit those same powertrains.

Gasoline models will include:

* X5 3.0i 3.0 L 255 hp (190.2 kW) inline-6
* X5 4.0i 4.0 L 275 hp (205.1 kW) V8
* X5 5.0i 5.0 L 355 hp (264.7 kW) V8
* X5 5.4is 5.4 L 420 hp (313.2 kW) V8

Transmission choices will likely remain like those today: 5-speed manual and 6-speed Steptronic. It is possible for BMW to implement their 6-speed SMG system into the V8-powered models. Also, this generation's xDrive AWD system will continue largely unchanged into the E70. Rumors also floating around is that the BMW 7-Series Electronic Shifter will be used in the E70 to rivial the 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class' shifter.

They'll use the column shifter to rival the ML's shifter?

LOL I would think that retaining a center-console shifter would be "defeating" the column shifter.

I hate it how they are installing all these cheap-looking Buick-style inventions like column shifters. What's next? A 3-man front bench like on old Chevy Caprice taxis?

Not sure. What I have read is that 4.4i will be replaced with 4.8i and there will be 5.xis (where x is still undetermined/unknown) to replace the current 4.8is. And the 5.xis is supposed to be a V10.

They could use the 335i's engine (twin-turbo direct injection 3 liter I-6) which has 300 hp/300 lb/ft torque which is great for the next gen X5....

I highly doubt they'll use the twin-turbo I6. It's performace is better than most V8s...even when you don't account for the fact that it's much lighter. It's torque curve would actually be a good match for pulling something like the X5.

Just curious, but what would the 5.4 be a derivitive of? The current V10 engine? If so, why not just use the current V10 with more horsepower?
