Considering trading the X5 for an X3...Opinions?
What is the opinion of the group considering X5 vs X3? We do not use the X for towing, so the smaller size should not be an issue. Is there a list of known issues surrounding the X3 that I should be aware of? I already test drove one and was pleased overall. Comments? Opinions? |

If it suits all your needs, go with it. There are still some issues, but not as many or big as the X5. The X5 is essentially built on the E39 platform, while the X3 is on the E46 platform. I just wish the X3 was available in a V8, or at least the N54 tt motor from the 135/335/535/X6...It just doesn't have the sport options of the bigger SAV that I like.
Look around on the X3world forum, that should give you an idea of what people have been dealing with

Well, I've got good news. The X3 is more reliable than the X5. It doesn't have a trick rear suspension, useless dual-zone climate, or untested electronics. The software and electronics are based on the E46, so it's definitely fairly stable.
One word of warning: I advise against a 2007 or early 2008 X3 model with the automatic transmission. Those are prone to serious hesistation and shifting problems that successive software updates may or may not fix. No one knows whether this is a transmission or software problem, or both. If you want the N52 motor with 260bhp, then get a manual. The '04s-'06s have great transmissions either way. If you're lucky enough to find a manual transmission, this is a great vehicle to have it. Otherwise, main problems include creaky door seals on the 04s-05s (dealer fix: teflon tape on window guides), a moonroof that may rattle (replace entire moonroof), and that's about it. Note about suspension choices: the 2004s had a stiffer suspension setup across the board that may not appeal to some. The X3 base rides pretty firmly no matter what; sport suspension may or may not be to your liking depending on road conditions. However, the X3 handles extremely well, and is terrific for urban driving. It squeezes between cars, responds quickly, and you can park or make a U-turn anywhere. It also has more cargo capacity than the E53 X5. There were 3 OEM tires. The Pirellis and Michelins are very good. The Bridgestone Turanzas suck, no questions asked. |

and there are fixes for the rattles in the panoramic sunroof, it doesn't need complete assy. changing anymore, just minor modifications to the rear rain channel. And as AzNMpower32 stated, it is very fun to drive with the manual tranny!
And the bridgestones just don't seem to go well with any BMW, no matter what model they're on, there's some kind of problem. I don't like them.

I owned an 02 3.0 X5 and now an 07 X3.
The X3 is a lot more fun to drive and a lot more power. There isn't a lot of difference in size either. As others have mentioned the auto trans tends to drive me nuts in city driving. Once it gets moving it shifts just fine but from a stop and coming to stop it can be irritating. I have had the software updated 4 times and it is better but it has never been as smooth as the 6pd auto in my 07 525. If you go with a pre 07 I suggest sticking with a 3.0 as the 2.5 was weak IMHO. Some may disagree but the X3 is a bit heavy for 180 hp. |

Answered your duplicate post in the X5 forum.
This is why multi-posting isn't a good idea. There is no way to have a discussion, as there are multiple responses in different threads. I agree with some of the points above, and disagree with others. Details in the thread in the X5 forum.

Thanks for all of the information so far. It is very helpful. I have read about some of the issues X3s have, but did not know the detailed information about the fixes and years affected. Being built on the E46 platform is a big bonus for me. I am familiar with that, and have had very good experiences.
I am surprised to read about the cargo capacity difference. I'm guessing the X3 accomplishes this with less leg room in the back seat? I am looking at the 05-06 range and unfortunately, it will have to be an automatic for the wife. I'm sorry for any confusion caused by posting on both the X5 and X3 boards. I wanted to get opinions from both sets of owners to get a well-rounded opinion. I didn't expect to have people checking and responding to both boards, but I will try to keep the discussion going. |

The X3 cargo capacity is larger because of the shape of the wheel wells. The cargo area has more vertical sides.
Most of us read both boards (and the others on the same site). An admin can collapse the two threads into one for you. Don't sweat it.

I was recently considering an X3 as well, but the tranny issue is a big deal breaker. You're taking a big risk with an auto tranny in an X3, make sure you test drive.

I would reiterate the joyful driving experience of an X3 with a standard transmission. Why they do not give the poor old 6cyl X5 this wonderful 6spd transmission is beyond all reason.
My Mom drives a 3.0i X5 with the 5speed and I am always feeling for that next gear. This engine and it's ilk demand it. Room-wise, I feel that the X3 more than competes with the X5 as far as even passenger room. The X5 has more, but to my mind it is unnecessary, even with a large sized family. Also, the X5 feels MUCH bigger than the X3 when it comes to manuevering and parking. The X3 is just tidier. Good luck with your choice. D
