trailer hitch saga

Hi all so I have become completely annoyed with this bs that I cant get a trailer hitch for my x5 so I called bmw customer relations and asked for some type of resolution to the matter and if they had any recomendations for a suitable replacement to there lack of having a trailer hitch and this is what i was told. "unfortunetly sir the company that produces the trailer hitch for north america was sold without our knowledge and we are working with other manufactures to provide us with trailer hitches" so i asked him when this is going to happen some type of eta "i dont know" This is completely off the wall Big Bad Ultimate Driving Machine BMW with no answer but " I dont know" what a joke.

It seems they could start with the company making the hitches for the E70... but that would make too much sense.

I heard that the owner of the company that sold hitches to BMW has passed away and the company is in disarray at the moment.

May I recommend etrailer.com ?

The only one on etrailer.com for the X5 thats worth 1/2 a damn is the curt hitch. It may work good enough for you just pulling a quad trailer, but I would prefer the oem hitch with the additional internal bracing myself naturally... just sucks that it has become as hard to find as bigfoot riding on the lochness monster.

Seem like in this economy anything can happen so I'm not sure
BMWNA is totally to blame. After all whoever was making the hitches
had a corner on the market and if BMW had advanced noticed they
might have bought the company. It is a bummer though....

I feel your pain! After almost two months of looking I sold my 2001 X5 and my 2006 3 series for my new X5 with a hitch. At last I can tow our new travel trailer. We have had it out three times now and it tows VERY well.

I agree, this is totally annoying and frustrating. I ordered mine in July. I spoke with the local BMW store (not where I ordered mine from) earlier this week and they said there are over 100 hitches on backorder nationwide right now.

Actually over 400 hitches backordered nationwide, and almost 300 wiring harnesses backordered.

You can get a substitute hitch, but the wiring harness kit can't be duplicated.

My suggestion is hunt EVERYWHERE! I called every BMW parts department across the country. I found a wiring harness at one dealership and a partial hitch kit at another. Huge pain in the ass. Recently I saw a wiring harness on ebay.

I think this is pretty bad on the part of BMW. They should have the patent to thes parts and be able to duplicate them with the current E70 hitch manufacturer.

Good luck man.
